Confession 17
Sometimes, first impressions arenât always right.
The next morning, I make the mistake of journeying down to the dining room for breakfast. Not having dinner the night before spurred me out of bed, into a shower, through dressing, and out of the door, heading to the dining room on the second floor. A few of the castleâs paid staff directed me when I became lost, but soon enough, I find myself walking through the large door in the familiar room.
The moment my eyes land on Marcus and Bianca, I want to flee back upstairs. But noâI stand up tallerâI have decided to face everything head on. No more cowering in my room. Iâve been raised as the Halifax Dilecta, and thatâs exactly what Iâll be.
âGood morning,â I say, crossing the room and dropping down into an empty chair across from the golden beauty.
She sips her coffee, her emerald gaze considering me over the top of the delicate cup.
âGood morning, Miss Halifax,â Marcus greets warmly. âI trust you slept well.â
I nod. âLike a rock.â
âWonderful.â He tears off a piece of scone and pops it into his mouth.
âHow about you, Miss Demms?â I shoot her a wry look.
She raises an eyebrow, lowering her cup. âQuite well myself. Thank you.â
The gentle, gracious woman was all façade. Her demeanor screams sophisticated businesswoman, and her lack of patience with my arrival tells me Iâm not wholly welcome, but not entirely unwelcome either. Basically, she doesnât care whether I live or die.
Yeahâ¦sheâs a peach.
Now that pleasantries are out of the way, I look down at the plate thatâs been set in front of me. Strawberries and cream crepes? My taste buds spring to attention.
âWhat do you have planned for today?â Marcus inquires once heâs finished chewing, and I glance up from my reverential inspection of breakfast.
âI thought Iâd visit the gardens.â
At my response, he smiles. âMay I join you?
âSure.â I pick up my fork and drop my eyes back to my plate. âIâd love that.â
Without another word, I dig in. The first bite is magic, the second is absolute perfection, and the third is pure genius. I think that, by the fifth, my eyes have rolled into the back of my head. Soon, Iâm scraping the last of the cream from the plate with the side of the fork, the scratch of metal on porcelain grating my nerves.
When I look up, both Marcus and Bianca are watching me with different expressions.
âGood?â he asks, amused, while she simply sighs and goes back to reading whatever is in the file spread next to her empty plate and half-drunk coffee.
I duck my head, a blush stealing up my face, and setting the fork down, laugh uncomfortably. âVery.â
âWould you care to join us, love?â he asks his daughter.
She waves him away, not looking up from her task, and shakes her head. âWith Luca returning later this week, I need to make sure the documents are completed for the blood bank in Adjud.â
âVery well.â He rises and presses a kiss to the top of her head.
