Chapter Six

Communication

Putting aside all the obvious factors such as illness, death, deceit and unfaithfulness (and many others you could probably add) few things will alter your submission dynamic like inconsistency. Inconsistency absolutely drives me up a wall. One of the main reasons I am in this relationship dynamic is because of a driving desire for His control, a desire so strong I think it has undeniably crossed into the realm of need. No, I won’t die without it, but I can’t imagine the depth of the hole in my heart I might feel without it at this time of my life. I can’t see myself going vanilla ever again, but I do understand that life circumstances, especially an illness in one of us, may one day alter our roles permanently. Regardless, I will always value consistency, caring and communication.

I can honestly say neither one of us has ever called the other a hurtful name. We rarely start a sentence in anger with “You always…” or “You never…” We do not say things to the other to humiliate, as in choosing a weakness and teasing about it. We don’t bring up mistakes of the past to shut the other down in an argument. News flash: Yes, we have certainly argued, but discord is becoming more and more a thing of the past now that I’m developing a realistic understanding of obedience. You’ve seen the couples on television talk shows: it has become of the utmost importance to make sure the towels are hung on the rack the way she wants them. He simply cannot tolerate having the toilet paper come off the roll from underneath, so he flips it every time he uses the bathroom. And who the hell keeps mixing up the salad forks with the dinner forks? Why can she never, never learn, no matter how many times he jumps down her throat about it, to park her car a little farther back from the garage wall? And so I think the couple focuses on all the minor things and the nitpicky fights they fool themselves into thinking they’ve actually “won” an argument, and then they don’t get around to addressing what caused all the tension in the first place.

My ex and I used to actually fight about dishrags. Before we’d have company, he’d always end up taking the dishrag I was using out to the barbeque grill to sop something up with it. So, I’d pull out another dishrag. That one would disappear on me, too. Then, I’d have to pull out a really ugly
