As Frankie bedded down in the holding cell for his first night in captivity, he lay on the bunk bed, his head on a thin pillow. He thought about his theory and wondered if Detective Randazzo would buy into it. Being convinced he wouldn’t sleep a wink, if for nothing else because of the loud snoring of his cellmates, he was surprised to be woken the next morning by a guard shouting his name. Frankie was surprised to realize, he’d slept like the proverbial log.

“Wakey wakey rise and shine. And Armstrong the limey guy, you just made bail, which means you miss our wonderful gourmet breakfast.”

The other prisoners laughed. Frankie got down from his bunk as the guard opened the door of the cell. He said goodbye to his newfound jail buddies, all three of whom had added to Frankie’s knowledge of the human race, in ways he could not have imagined.

“Good luck Frankie boy,” shouted Denis as he was led away. Frankie turned back and waved goodbye. He was taken down a corridor into a small room with a steel table bolted to the floor and two chairs on either side of the table, similarly anchored to the floor. He was told to sit and wait. The guard left and then a few minutes later, the door opened again, and a smartly suited man came into the room. He was tall and wiry, and wore a big smile on his face, showing whiter than white teeth. Frankie stood and they shook hands.

“Riley, Michael Riley. Joe asked me to come see what I could do.” Riley sat and gestured for Frankie to do the same.

“How much trouble am I in?” asked Frankie.

“You want the good news or the good news?” replied Riley. “Silly question. The fact is they’re letting you go, so I’m here under false pretenses as it were.” Frankie couldn’t hide his surprise.

“How so?” he asked.

“They have the initial autopsy reports in and there’s a development. The victim, Ms. Lisa Ledinski?” Frankie nodded. “She must have put up a bit of a fight. The pathologist found minute traces of skin under one of her fingernails. The killer must have realized the potential for this to be a problem, so he, or she, had scraped the nails clean, but there were some tiny traces left, just about enough for a reliable DNA sample. As the sample didn’t match your DNA, you’re off the hook for the time being at least.”

Frankie’s shoulders slumped. He hadn’t realized how tense he’d been.

“Christ, that’s a relief. You said for the time being?”

“Yeah. Unless they find some compelling evidence to link you directly to the death of that poor woman, they’ve concluded you’re not a great suspect. However, you were the last known person to see the victim alive, plus as I understand it, you don’t have a great alibi. So, they’re letting you go, but you’re still a person of interest shall we say.”

“What about the charge for withholding evidence?”

“Dropped. From what I saw of the arrest details, it was never going to fly anyway.
