TWENTY-TWO

No sign of the sniper.

Case had come out of the water between a houseboat and a small launch, and the crates beside him on his left formed visual cover because the sniper had fired from somewhere upstream.

Somewhere on the riverbank, this side, between here and the upstream suspension bridge carrying road traffic across the Thames.

A single-storey white-painted building set back from the dock offered better cover but Case wanted to reach it in an unexpected way – impossible to tell if the sniper was aiming in this direction right at this moment – so he threw himself forward into a rolling breakfall and the impact of ground on shoulder blade felt like nothing much as ground then sky flowed up his visual field and he was on his feet once more and at the building’s righthand side.

Some kind of Sea Cadets headquarters.

No crack of sound. No second shot.

Back on the other side of the Thames, the yellow-clad corpse lay clumped in place on the blue-railed bridge. The small “tributary” beneath the footbridge was in fact the entrance to a modest-sized marina.

Still no more shots.

Not yet.

When the enemy has a rifle and you don’t, that’s normally a clear signal to get away: conversely, if the enemy expected their intended to target to flee, and the environment was visually cluttered like this place, then moving towards the danger offered possibilities.

If Case made forward progress while keeping the river to his left, he should be drawing closer to the sniper’s position, except for one obvious awkward factor: the sniper was most likely on the move.

This was a Tuesday morning and there would be people about, though mostly in their cars far away from the riverside, heading for work or making the school run. The sniper would want to get clear, because even if no one had reported the sound of a gunshot yet – if they’d even recognised it: this was genteel Surrey, after all – someone would stumble on Pritesh Kumra’s corpse soon enough and call 999 straight away because everyone carries a phone.

Except for Case right now.

And Kat.

She had started running eastwards rather than west, and even if she’d turned around before the first ten minutes had elapsed – if she’d gained a clear view ahead and realised Kumra couldn’t possibly have run that way – she would still be a significant distance away and on the other side of the river.

But she might well have heard the shot.

Doesn’t matter.

She’s not here.

Move. Now.

Tracksuit sodden with water and still dripping, Case moved down one side of the low white building. At the far end, he transferred his debit card (which might or might not be compromised) and ID from a zip pocket of the tracksuit jacket to a zip pocket of the trousers, dragged the wet jacket off him, and dumped it on the ground.

He was tempted to pull off the t-shirt also, but he might need to enter civilised surroundings and looking soaked was bad enough. And right now it offered
