Precursor Theories and Models

Story Grammars. One of the earliest attempts to explain more formally how readers represent discourse focused on the development of story grammars or rules that describe the inherent “structure” of discourses, which readers presumably use to help understand and remember the contents of those discourses (Rumelhart, 1975; Thorndyke, 1977). This approach to explaining discourse processing thus was influenced by earlier memory research showing that the capacity to remember the events described in a text is often influenced by preexisting schemata (Bartlett, 1932); in the case of story grammars, these schemata consist of abstract knowledge (in the form of simple rules) that readers use in the service of aiding their understanding.
