Chapter 11

“Why are you here?”

“I found one of the women.”

Grim lines bracketed Viktor’s perfect mouth. It was the closest he came to betraying any agitation. His hair was moussed and sculpted into clean lines, his jeans and long-sleeve shirt were pressed and neatly tucked in.

Sasha already suspected the answer, but he asked anyway. “Dead?”

“Yes.”

Fuck. Sasha wanted to slam his fist into something. “Pictures?”

Viktor reached into his compact backpack and pulled out a manila folder. “She was found in a hotel room at the Hay-Adams.”

Viktor handed Sasha the photos and their fingertips brushed against each other. A shiver worked its way through his body, sizzling along his nerve endings like an electrical live wire, sending pulses to his brain and his cock.

He studied the dead woman dispassionately. His gut churned like a ship tossed about on the waves. Someone was going to a lot of trouble to tie up loose ends pertaining to him and Viktor.

Why? There had been no communication from anyone regarding the photos.

“Has anyone contacted you about the pictures on your phone?”

“No.”

“Any idea what game these people are playing?”

“Not really a game.” Viktor’s gaze cut to the gory photograph, lingered there. “Two people are dead. And another is missing.”

Sasha wasn’t prone to fear—far from it—but a flicker began in his belly.

Something about Viktor’s refusal to meet Sasha’s gaze sent another warning blaring in his skull. Viktor knew more than he was telling. He should be more worried about what he was keeping from him, but Sasha would admit, only in the confines of his own mind, that he was happy to see him.

He couldn’t afford to be happy.

“Cause of death?”

“Appears to be beaten to death.”

“Appears to be?” Sasha didn’t like where this was headed.

“Actual cause of death was a single puncture wound likely caused by a sharp knife which pierced the heart. She bled to death internally. The beating was either to obscure the cause or someone takes a lot of pride in disfiguring and obliterating for shits and giggles.”

Blyad.

Sasha studied the details in the photos. This murder was not the same as the bartender. The overdose wasn’t a quick, painless killing.

She died from the knife blade. The beating was overkill.

The woman’s execution, however, gave away her murderer. His heart iced. Dmitri Komarov’s signature was a single death wound and then he beat the body severely. Sasha knew it well. He’d cautioned him, again and again, when he’d been training him, not to leave any tells, any characteristics for authorities to connect his kills. But the man’s ego would not be appeased.

Like the meaning of his surname, the little gnat had been a pest in Sasha’s side since the day he’d begun to train him. Clearly, Dmitri had continued to carve his signature in his jobs. Sasha had been adamant that one day that egotistical need to mark the kill as his was going to be his downfall.

Someone was bound to notice and connect the dots.

And the FSB did not take kindly to obvious evidence.

If his compatriot had killed the woman, then something more sinister was going on.
