Dani maneuvered into her pod and resisted the urge to slam her door. A person on crutches couldn’t stalk into a room and that angered her even more because she had no way of releasing the pent-up frustration.

“You’re pissed again,” Char stated.

“I guess I’m constantly reminded of the ways you either don’t share something because you think you’re protecting me, or because you don’t view me as an equal. Why haven’t you or Maggie ever invited me to the conference room?” Dani laid her silver sticks against the overstuffed chair and sat down heavily.

“I honestly thought you were a lot like Toni. You heard her reaction. She reluctantly joined us. It wasn’t because I don’t believe you have a valuable perspective.” Char sighed. “I suppose there is a tiny part of me that still sees that innocent young girl who needs protection. I’m sorry. I know I’m not your mother, but I sort of assumed that role when our own mother wasn’t up for the task. It’s a hard habit to break.” Char took a seat on the couch leaning forward as she spoke.

“You know it’s ironic that Imara, of all people, is responsible for a lot of soul searching and a belief I do have something more to add to The Organization. Maybe I’ll never be a field agent again, but I don’t think I want to be entirely relegated to the lab.”

“Okay, that’s fair. I didn’t know that. Now that I do, I promise, I will try to keep you in the loop. I was serious about breaking this whole tradition of eking out information in tiny doses. Fuck that whole need to know basis. It’ll be better if all of us are in the know, all the time.”

“’Bout damn time. I love Maggie, you know that, but this will be better for everyone. You do know that no matter what grand gesture she made today to look to you to lead the meeting, she’s going to have a hard time letting go. Don’t trounce on her in the process, okay? People go through shit when they retire and as strong as Maggie is, she might feel you’re putting her out to pasture. That can’t be an easy pill to swallow. She’s led The Organization for many years. And done so quite successfully.”

Char took a deep breath. “Thanks for the reminder, little sis, and you are so right. See, it’s already paying off to include you more in the planning end of things. Any idea on how to make this transition easy for everyone?”

“Maybe you should ask Doctor Brenda. I’ll bet she’s good at dealing with all kinds of situations, especially ones in which human emotion is an issue.”

“It looked like you and Candy were getting along well. Have you forgiven her for her deception?”

“I’d be a total ass if I didn’t. I suppose pot met kettle. It wasn’t like I was very honest with her. We can both share a load of guilt on that front. What I’m a bit confused about is my feelings for her.
