CHAPTER 37

“It’s single-malt. Can’t figure out the variety” Fravardin observed after a sip. He was familiar with the taste of common brands. This was different.

Arushi in her cotton lahenga-choli1 with coruscate smile remarked “Make a guess”

He was befuddled either by the allure of her dark belly button or the taste of this rare brand.

“Can’t”

“Aberlour A'Bunadh. Spanish single malt” she spread the lahenga lounging on the Italian leather.

“Aha! Familiar with most Scottish ones. This is a rare one from Spain”

“Thought you might relish it for a change. Dinner is nearly ready. Tapas for the eve” the home-help served the La Merienda2 of Gambas al Ajillo3 “Allergic to prawns?”

“Nope. They say If you’re in Rome, be a Roman. I’m in India yet it’s Spanish?”

“I love cooking. Try it. Mightn’t be all great” she pushed the plate towards him.

He took a bite “Worth the effort”

She let the cubes melt in Aberlour A'Bunadh, “You’re married, aren’t you? Reckon fetching your wife”

“Too late. She’s dead”

“Sorry to hear. How?”

“Mystery unresolved. On my return from Puerto Rico she was dead due to a AC malfunction”

“Accident?”

“Doubtful. Checked with the AC makers. Hardly ever does the Freon gas leak unless the valve is tampered”

“Homicide?”

“Likely. Couldn’t figure who’d want to kill her”

Arushi sipped the single-malt lest the melted ice diluted its taste “Could be accident. Did many know you’re away?”

“My wife Noushin and my lawyer friend Mehrdad other than my in-laws. Think, they were after me”

“Who’d want to kill you?”

“Don’t know. Don’t have foes except the usual university rivalry”

She walked to the glass patio leading to balcony. The placid draught stroked her cheeks blowing the hair. She puffed out India Kings4 to the oracular aura of the deluged dark. Other than street lamp flickers this part of New Town was pacific. She relished this solitude. She could gawk at the stars, swan into orphic musings. Often in serenity, the reality unveiled in a new light.

She spun “Could it be your research?”

Her camber spelt the numinous of the Goddess Serene. He tried to figure if she was the ‘Queen on a Chariot’ gritty, firm in her poise. Her hair splaying over the eye-catching bosom cloaked by the choli, the slim waist gracing it could resemble al-lat5 incarnate. The bare dark navel on her sonsie torso was the magic epicentre, augmented by the well-endowed round keister tucked below the cotton lahenga.

It came as bolt from the blue from the Goddess Serene. The pulse slid from her magnetic agerasia to her cerebrum.

“Never thought of it” he gulped the malt.

“Anything striking?”

“While back, I was looking for evidence for my research on the extraction of DNA from fossils. I sprung into my ancestral roots in Abu Shahrein6. There I discovered a fossil. Extracted its genes. This fossil was one from Sumerian civilisation. The genetic code was that of the first civilised race”

She returned, gulped the drink “Interesting. Was it published?”

“In an Iranian journal. Only extract”

“Who else knew of it?”

“Those who read it. It did create some uproar then. Nothing remarkable”

“Did your wife know?”

“Of course.
