Here are some more suggestions of practical things you can do to assist the emotional work.

• Respect your own feelings.

• Allow yourself to cry.

• Check your progress periodically. For example are the down times less frequent or less intense than they were originally?

• Listen to music, dance, sing, play an instrument.

• Share your experience with other people: talk to a friend, join a support group, go to a counsellor or someone who is a trained listener.

• Find an isolated spot and scream.

• Wear an article of clothing that belonged to the absent person.

• Carry a memento.

• Express how you feel, with paints, poetry, writing or sculpting.

• Hug a teddy bear or soft toy. Pat a pet.

• Learn how to express anger constructively.

• Write yourself a letter of love, or forgiveness.

• Write a letter to the person who is absent and read it out loud.

• Sit and talk to a photograph of your loved one. Tell them how it is for you now.
