Time dragged forward slowly during that day, and almost nothing interrupted the monotony of the cellar. Once, at midday, their guards brought food, but otherwise the three prisoners sat in empty silence, wrapped in misery. By the day’s end, as dusk fell once again upon the city, Cord’s nerves and temper were fraying badly. But it was Heleth who erupted to her feet.

“Much more of this and I’ll go through the walls!” she snarled.

Cord smiled mirthlessly at the concrete walls and the solid door. “I wish you could. But maybe we should try to jump the guards when they bring food next. With Heleth’s eyes we might get away in the dark.”

Samella looked doubtful, but Heleth brightened. Then they all froze, at a sudden tap on the cellar door.

“Cord!” It was Stele’s voice, in a penetrating whisper.

“Still here,” Cord said sourly.

“Something’s happening,” Stele said, sounding anxious. “Tuller went away earlier, didn’t say where, but when he got back he looked pleased with himself—like he does when he’s hurt somebody. And now he’s told us we’re moving, to another part of Limbo.”

“Leaving us here?” Cord asked tensely.

“Looks that way,” Stele said. “Nobody knows what’s going on, and Rontal and Jeko got into trouble trying to find out. But Tuller’s even pulled your guards away. I don’t like it—and I wish I could help you.”

“Can’t you get us out?” Cord demanded.

“No—Tuller’s got the key,” Stele said. “And I have to join the others before he gets suspicious.” He paused. “I’m really sorry. And 1 wish I could have seen that planet.”

The three stared at each other fearfully as Stele’s light footsteps faded away, outside.

“What could Tuller be up to?” Heleth wondered.

“That’s the question,” Samella said. “What would make him come back acting pleased with himself?” A small frown creased her brow. “And why is he moving the Streeters?”

“Because something is going to happen here,” Cord said, almost without thinking. “To us.”

Then his eyes widened at the thought of what those words could mean, and Samella drew her breath in sharply.

“That’s it!” she said in a rush. “The CeeDees! Tuller must have got to them, and sold us out!”

Heleth said something vicious under her breath.

“Maybe he did a deal,” Samella went on. “The CeeDees get us and agree to leave the Streeters alone for a while. Or maybe he got paid.”

Cord glowered as he thought about it. It was the most logical explanation for Tuller’s strange behaviour. It was also wholly sickening. “A good thing Jeko didn’t tell Stele all the details about where Lathan will land,” he growled.

“That doesn’t help us,” Heleth said sharply. “How do we get out of here?”

His temper ablaze, Cord strode to the door and delivered a thunderous kick. But the door’s solid frame was set firmly in the concrete wall, and it only rattled slightly.

“Could we chip the concrete away around it?” Samella ventured.

“Not without tools,” Cord said shortly. “And it’s nearly too dark for anyone but Heleth to see.”

They glanced up, seeing that the light filtering between the planks of the ceiling was nearly gone.
