Istruggled to pay any attention to my course the morning after the encounter with Sabrine in the utility room. I felt horrible about cheating on Terry in our house and was sick with terror when I considered how close we’d come to getting caught. But at the same time, I felt like it sealed a pact between Sabrine and me. We had our secret from the world, something that belonged to us alone.

“Liv, are you with us?”

I blinked, realizing that the course tutor, Maxine, was trying to get my attention.

“Oh, sorry, yes,” I said, warmth spreading across my face.

“Could you tell us a little bit about your personal style?”

“Um, yeah, like in the house?” I stammered.

“In general. Three words that would describe it, like the others have done.” Maxine, to her credit, managed to keep a smile on her face and her impatience from showing.

Everyone was looking at me. I was mortified. Glancing at the table of the woman beside me, I see she had written the three words in her notebook, one below the other. I’d completely missed the exercise. I spouted out the first words that came into my mind. “Erm, I guess, simple…classical but modern at the same time…elegant.” All words I associated with Sabrine and her cottage.

“It sounds like you might be an admirer of the French style,” Maxine commented.

Oh god, was I that obvious? “Yes,” I said, nodding vigorously.

“We’ll we doing a lesson on that later in the semester, looking at how the French typically marry old and new together, keeping things sophisticated but casual at the same time.”

“I’m looking forward to it,” I said, showing my teeth in an approximation of a smile.

Then Maxine was on to the next student, and I did my best to pay attention to what she was saying in case I got quizzed again. I did a fair job of it, but was relieved when we were finally released back into the world and I was free to indulge in my guilty fantasies.

Sabrine was at the school gates when I went to get Ben later. “On Saturday, I’m having a dinner,” she said as we watched the boys walk towards us. “Ben will be staying with Albert. I’d like you to come if you can.”

“Who else will be there?”

“Some friends from the scene.”

“I’m not sure.” I didn’t really want to share Sabrine with others, even if they were her friends. But then something occurred to me. “Is Mariella going?”

“Yes. She likes you. She’s keen to meet you again.”

That settled me. There was no way I was allowing Mariella to steal Sabrine away. “Okay, I’ll ask Terry.”

“There’s a dress code,” she added. “A theme, rather—creatures of the forest.”

“I’m not sure I have anything for that.” I hadn’t dressed up for years.

“Oh, don’t worry. I’ll have something I want you to wear.”

“What is it?”

“You’ll find out, chérie. I like to surprise you.” She pressed my fingers between hers, but only briefly, as the boys were upon us.

“I’ll let you know later,” I said to her before taking Ben into my arms for a hug.
