CHAPTER EIGHTEEN
Swann opened his eyes, but the world was still black. He could make nothing out and as he tried to move his hands, he felt the shackles pull tight around his wrists.
âHey?â Swann yelled, his voice muffled by something. âWhere am I?â
He could hear footsteps somewhere above his head and his heart raced. Trying his best he could not remember much beyond the ringing in the air of gunfire.
The pain.
The darkness and stillness washing over him.
âAm I dead?â It was more a question to himself but he said it aloud all the same.
âNot at all, I expect you will wish you were soon enough.â
It was a womanâs voice and in a way he recognised it but could not place it. From where her voice was he could tell she was somewhere above his head but still he could see nothing.
âWhy are you here and who are you?â She pressed.
âI could ask the same of you,â Swann answered. âThis place is supposed to be abandoned.â
âWhen I picked you up on the cameras, I thought you were another idiot wanting to explore the abandoned tower but the way you moved, the way the pair of you navigated the site said something different.â
âMy friend,â Swann interrupted. âWhere is she, is she ok?â
âSheâs fine, for now.â His hostâs words were filled with menace. âSo I will ask one more time. Who are you and why are you here?â
âLet me see your face and Iâll talk to you.â
Swann heard her move then felt the sharp sting across his exposed skin as they ripped the tape from across his eyes. Feeling the sting Swann realised he was still wearing the balaclava. As he blinked away the pain he searched for his captor.
When he saw the woman peering down at him, he could not help but laugh.
âWhatâs funny?â The woman spat as she tossed away the tape which seemed to have taken some of Swannâs eyebrow hair with it.
âBloody hell Amber,â Swann chuckled. âIt would have been a little better if youâd taken the balaclava off before you waxed my eyebrows.â
âHow do you know me?â
Amber had been an operator on the Tempus site and had been allocated to Swann when he had joined the project. She had been his guide and support when he had been fitted with his mask and prepared to make his Leaps using the Pods within the Distortion Zone. She had always been friendly and supportive of Catalinaâs purpose.
âTake the mask off,â Swann sighed. âItâs me, itâs Swann.â
Amberâs face was filled with disbelief as she wrapped her fingers around the neck of the balaclava and ripped it free.
âMichael!â She exclaimed and stepped back from the table he was shackled to. âHow, why, who?â
âIâll answer everything if youâll let me up.â
âOf course.â Amber apologised as she came back to her senses.
âWho was with you?â Amber pressed as she unshackled his right hand. âWas it Cat?â
âYes and is she ok?â
âI think so.â
âWhat did you shoot us with, sheâs already injured?â
âOh itâs nothing,â Amber chuckled. âItâs a mild sedative I used to keep looters and inquisitive types away.
