So, What Should I Do Then
In this section, weâll be going over some things you should be doing whenever youâre making a game. As well as some best practices and things to keep in mind.
Note that all of this can be changed. The game industry is much like fashion; some things that I might think are absolutely atrocious right now might be in vogue by 2025.
Instead of holding yourself to the letter of the word, try to keep in mind the spirit in which they were intended, and the time they were written.
1. Find your biggest selling point
You might think that the gameplay, the story, the characters, and every element of your game is perfect. Despite this, you should find one of these elements and ensure that you perfect it.
This is your gameâs âhookâ and its biggest selling point. For example, Darkest Dungeon has deep, intricate mechanics, an excellent story, and even fun characters! Despite all that, most trailers are focused on the eldritch, dark atmosphere the game provides, while innovating with mechanics.
Finding a hook doesnât mean you should throw everything else away. Rather, it helps you focus on what the best parts of your game are.
2. Donât ignore sound design
Games being fun is simply irrational. Itâs like the enjoyment of any other art form; thereâs no logical reason for it. However, there are things you can do to ensure that your game is easier to enjoy.
Making the sound design in your game better will make your players significantly more engaged with the game. While they might not even consciously notice the songs and SFX effects in the game, their subconscious will pick them up.
