Chapter 4.
The Observation room allowed the subject to be seen but not know they were being watched. It was not always a good idea to watch them if they understood another party had them under study. Many a suspect had been brought into an observation room only to stare back at the two-way mirror on the wall or the camera. However, in this case the subject didnât know what a camera was. A mirror tended to make her upset, so they had decided to do the evaluations inside a secure room with audiovisual feeds from multiple sources.
Jason had yet to meet Captain Arch Saunders; he was still in transit. His host for today was a middle aged lady who had experience running managed care facilities. She was short, about five feet, wore glasses and had a light, disarming voice which sounded much younger than her fifty years. Mrs. Victoria Major was a force to be reckoned with at the center and was going to make sure everything would follow state mandated procedures.
Jason had parked his car in an open lot when he arrived after phoning ahead when he was twenty miles away. He wanted to makes sure they knew he was coming and to have the paperwork ready. Heâd done what he could over the Internet, but a lot needed to be done by hand. He brought along two passport quality pictures to match the ones heâd uploaded to the website of the center.
He was buzzed in at the center by a security guard who carefully checked his credentials and compared them to the ones they already had on file. After being issued a visitorâs pass, Jason was admitted into facility, but was forced to wait for Mrs. Major to escort him to the observation room. Heâd been adamant about seeing Candy in person before he would even consider the job. If she appeared to be a hoax, drugged or in any way mistreated, he was going to leave immediately and file an incident report on his return. Jason didnât expect it would happen, given the amount of publicity the case had already generated, but he was firm in his convictions.
âIâm glad you came,â Mrs. Major had told him. âWeâve never had a client at this facility like her before. Iâm sure youâll understand when you see her.â
âIs she under any kind of sedative?â He asked. It was a concern of his.
âNo,â she told him. âWe considered having a psychiatrist prescribe mood stabilizers, but weâre afraid how they might affect her behavior. Candy was out of control when she first arrived, but sheâs calmed down a lot. Weâre trying to find a way to evaluate her skill level and thatâs where you come in.â
They walked down the fresh-scrubbed halls of the facility to a small room with a set of chairs and monitor mounted into the wall. Mrs. Major told him to be patient. They needed to bring Candy into the observation area before he would be allowed to see her.
