CHAPTER 11

Malcolm led them out of the room quietly, his hawk like gaze scanning the hallway. He motioned for Victoria to follow him and briskly walked toward the staircase of the hotel.

“Mal,” she said nervously, trying her best to mask her fear.

He made a gesture of silence as he slowly opened up the door. Voices could be heard traveling up the stairs and he quickly shut the entrance. “Elevator,” he muttered as he grabbed her by the hand. His finger jabbed into the up button on the wall as he glanced over to the staircase. Two men dressed in black suits were walking toward them with deadly expressions lining their faces.

The door dinged open and he dragged Victoria through. One of the two men shouted at the other one and they sprinted toward the elevator. Malcolm quickly pressed the button to close the doors and felt his heart leap out of his chest as the two men came into view with guns drawn.

“Jesus, fuck,” Victoria said, the color drained out of her face. “Who the hell are those guys?”

“I have no idea,” Malcolm said seriously. “But we need to lose them.” Malcolm hit the emergency stop button in between floors and reached up to open up the hatch in the roof. “I’ll give you a boost.”

“Alright,” she said without hesitation, trusting him completely with her safety. She stepped onto his outstretched hands and lifted herself through the small hole in the roof of the car.

He lifted her up fairly easily and held her as she dragged herself through the hole. She reached down to return the favor and helped him make his way through the hatch. He pulled himself up and searched the elevator shaft for an exit.

“We’re going to jump onto the next car that comes up,” he said to her, his eyes filled with determination.

Her brows knit in surprise and she released a deep breath. “Our days just haven’t been the same without men chasing us with guns and getting into situations that could kill us.”

He winked at her slyly. “It does have a certain kind of charm,” he agreed. As he saw the car in the adjacent shaft beginning to rise toward them, his fingers intertwined with hers tightly. “On my count,” he said over the sound of moving metal. “One... two... three!” His hand squeezed hers as they made the long ten foot jump.

With a loud thump they landed on the roof of the car. “Maybe we shouldn’t tell your mother about this,” Malcolm suggested as he lifted the hatch.

“But it’ll be fun!” She exclaimed sarcastically. “You can tell her how danger follows you around, like you’re some kind of secret agent. It’ll be manly and romantic.”

His eyes twinkled with mischief. “I’m sure I’ll be able to swing that,” he said as he helped Victoria drop down through the opening. He jumped down behind her, and quickly assessed the situation. The car was occupied by a mother and her young son; both of them wearing shocked expressions.
