Amos

I JERK THE noose from my neck to loosen the chokehold, relieved to be rid of the fucking thing, and pull my cell from my pocket and search the screen.

Hitting the blue and white icon for Signal, I tap the top contact then select video.

A ring or two later, a face I know well surfaces.

“Well?” he asks.

“I've planted the seed of doubt,” I announce immediately.

“Did you crush her?”

His return smile is just as ugly as mine—as triumphant. “Not like I wanted to.”

“That's my boy. Show restraint. Your time will come.”

I clench my jaw. “She believed my inference.”

“She wants to believe you.”

“Yes.”

I pause.

Clearly, he reads the hesitation in my expression. “What?”

“She has a date with Arnault this evening.”

He snorts in disgust. “We cannot have the two of them conferring.”

“You think I'm unaware? Fuck,” I spit.

“Your costume grows thin.”

“Yes,” I reply, switching to English, a language I hate where I falsify my ancestry so Gia Township believes me to be what I've faked for years—an American transplanted in Switzerland at the tender age of thirteen.

“Soon, your role will be finished and another inserted in its place.”

Relief sweeps through me. Now, if I can stop their rendezvous from occurring and retain my cover for awhile longer.

“If I can keep la chatte from interfering,” I say aloud.

“You must be truly upset to allow French into the middle of your English.”

“My emotions are high.”

“You called her assistant a cunt.”

I squeeze the cell. “I know what I called Chloe.”

“Take care of the friend, and you take the legs from beneath Gia Township. She will need to rely even more heavily on you.”

My cruel smile is a hard press of lips. I let the expression take shape.

He smiles at the bastard I am, both figuratively and literally.
