Chapter sixteen

Lost

Isaac

Blood dripped down my face, the copper smell covering me like a thick blanket as dead bodies lay scattered around me. I had fought with all my might and lost count of how many lives I took, but it didn’t matter. They never made it past me, and my little bird was safe.

But for how long?

It would take a few days, but they would regroup and try again. They had found us now, and they would never stop.

Not until I made them.

Maybe Joanne was right, I needed to help her, and now, with this warmth that moved under her skin, I knew it for sure. I could turn her; she was strong enough, and we would take back what was ours together.

She would rule beside me as I wanted from when we met, and no one would stand in our way.

I didn’t dare to go back to them until I knew I had killed every last one of them and patrolled the woods. I didn’t trust Dale, he might have warned us, but he didn’t help us.

He only would if he knew we could win, but I was sure he was lurking somewhere like the ass he was.

Always watching and waiting for the right moment to strike. He doesn’t want me back as the Alpha, no he only wanted Gregory gone and then fight me. I saw it in his eyes, he wanted to challenge me.

He wanted me to think he was on my side, and then when I let my guard down, he would attack.

But that’s the thing, I never let my guard down.

Time seemed to pass faster than I could keep up and before I realized it, the moon watched over me, shining bright. It was illuminating the path back, back to my mate.

Maybe I should have seen it as a warning, this beacon of light guiding me back. Perhaps I shouldn’t have stayed away for that long; I trusted my friends too much. Because when I saw William and Laila unconscious on the cold ground, without Conner and Joanne, my heart clenched, and fear crawled under my skin.

My mouth turned dry; no sound left me as I tried to let the bond lead me to my love. I could feel her, feel that she was okay but nothing more. There wasn’t a direction to go in, nothing to follow, as if she was standing beside me.

Logan’s restlessness made my fear rise, and I fought this need to destroy the trees that protected me not so long ago. I wanted to destroy everything in sight because I knew it was this pack doing, the same as at the doctor’s office. They had these tricks up their sleeves, ones I couldn’t fight against.

They weren’t our allies; no, they were another enemy. They had what was mine, and I would burn this forest to the ground until I had her back in my arms.

William’s groan snapped me back, and I watched as he climbed to his feet, staggering slightly.

“What happened?” I growled, making him stumble further.
