Students: Subjects or Objects of Ed-Tech?

Part of the problem we face when it comes to rethinking education technologies is that we must also confront the systems and practices already in place in education. Many of them posit students as the objects, not the subjects, of education. That is, these technologies mean to build, conform, fill with knowledge, restrict, constrict, and construct students. Students aren’t the subjects; they aren’t building and constructing knowledge. They don’t get a lot of choices, and they don’t get much, if any, control over their learning.

If education technology views students as objects, then that makes it easier for software providers to collect and analyze student data without student permission. If education technology views students as objects, then what students do isn’t worthy of much, or so we’re told. It’s not even worthy of being stored permanently in a manila envelope.
