Default Routes

Default routes are simply port forwarding rules used when there’s no route explicitly configured for a specific internet protocol. Default routes get used when managing all the traffic not defined in the routing tables.

To configure a default route on a Cisco Router, we use the command with the following general syntax.

This tells the device to forward all the traffic destined to networks that are not in the routing table to the specified IP address.

You can also send all packets to a certain interface using the command:

- Send all the packets destined for networks unavailable in the routing tables to the specified interface.
