Chapter 56 - Entering the Prison

As soon as they entered the inner part of the house, Nie Ying became so anxious he felt like jumping up and down. He had not known Wen Heng for very long, but had already developed a reliance and trust in him so profound that even to the point of death, he would not believe Wen Heng could be so brutal. This conduct did not seem at all like that of a disciple from a righteous sect, and went against the heroic moral code known by all under the sky.

“Brother, I understand you are seeking insurance, but you do not have to be so… so merciless.” Nie Ying’s brow was knotted tightly. He said, “Two old people cannot stand in the way of our rescuing the prisoners, why must we get the innocent involved?”

“Oh?” Wen Heng said without much care. “‘Killing one to save a hundred, giving up on little benefits for the larger good,’ I thought this was the universally known axiom, what is there to criticise about it?”

“You speak so lightly!” Anger surfaced on Nie Ying’s face. He said loudly: “Whose life is not a life? The life of any person concerns the heavens, how can you weigh one life against another like that? This way of thinking, how is it any different from those demons who take lives to benefit themselves?!”

He was not good with expressing himself verbally, having not received much education. Many words of rebuke and advice turned over and over in his chest, but he could not voice them clearly, and this sent him into a red-faced fluster. Falteringly, he stammered: “Yue Chi, I am not saying you are a bad person… I cannot watch on as you harm others, no matter for what reason. Rescuing that lot is important, but we have to do things with a conscience. If not... if not, it is no great trouble for me to go back to Hai Yan Sect to seek help. Let’s not go take this risk tomorrow.”

Wen Heng gazed at him steadily, then suddenly laughed.

He shook his head helplessly, sighing in his normal tone, “Nie-xiong, if I really wanted to harm them, then I would not give you the antidote.”

Nie Ying dazedly looked down at the bottle he was gripping tightly in his hand.

The shock and anger swelling in his chest was like a bubble pricked, deflating very swiftly. After some delay he said, “You…”

“Have you ever heard of “Splitting Soul and Scattering Spirit?”

Nie Ying shook his head blankly: “No.”

Wen Heng smiled, “That’s right. There is no such thing as “Splitting Soul and Scattering Spirit,” I made it up to scare them.”

“...” Nie Ying’s head hurt. “What are you trying to do?”

“We must not harm others wilfully, but we must not blindly trust either. I might not have poisoned them, but I certainly scared them; the effect is the same in the end.” Wen Heng said meaningfully and heartfully, “Da’ge, we are gambling with our lives here, we cannot suffer even the slightest loss.
