The Gingerbread Man’s House

Do you ever wonder what happens with your Christmas decorations while you’re sleeping? Well, late at night when everyone is asleep, all the reindeer, gingerbread men and women, nutcrackers, and ornaments wake up! Now if you ever sneak downstairs to try to catch a peak, you won’t see anything. Little ears are made to hear the littlest noises. The moment you step out of bed, they rush back into place.

Sometimes though, problems happen while everyone is sleeping. One time, the Gingerbread Man was outside replacing the gumdrops on his roof, and a kitty named Micha thought he could help get the old gumdrops off faster than the Gingerbread Man could. Micha jumped up on the counter just above the gingerbread house and dangled his paw above the rooftop. He couldn’t quite reach the table below, so he inched a little bit closer. And then a little bit closer, and a little bit closer until he was too close! Micha fell on top on the gingerbread house with a CRASH!

The Gingerbread Man landed with an ”Oomph!” on the table. All the other decorations turned to see what had caused the commotion. “My house!” cried the Gingerbread Man, “It’s in pieces!” Micha’s whiskers drooped. He felt horrible. “Don’t worry,” said the Christmas angel from a top the tree, “I can see fresh ginger house pieces and icing in the kitchen.” “We can use my sleigh to carry them,” offered Toy Santa. “But how will we get up there?” asked the Nutcracker. Micha began to purr. He had an idea. He went over to Toy Santa’s sleigh and began to nuzzle it up on to his head.

“That’s perfect,” cried a Snowman, “Rudolph, can you pull some ribbons off the presents under the tree?” Rudolph and the other plastic deer began tugging off ribbons and brought them over to the Snowmen, who used them to tie the sleigh to Micha’s bag. “I think we’re all set,” said Santa. Micha did not move. “What’s wrong, kitty? Are you afraid of heights?” Micha shook his head and flicked his tail into the sleigh. “Oh!” cried the Angel from on top the tree, “He needs someone to ride with him to pick up the ginger pieces.” “I can do it!” volunteered a Teddy Bear ornament. Together, Micha and the Teddy Bear loaded up the sleigh full of ginger house pieces and carried them over to the Gingerbread Man.

Together, all the decorations with hands started helping the Gingerbread Man build a new house. It took them most of the night, but just before sunrise, the gingerbread house was finished. “Thank you!” cried the Gingerbread Man, “It’s even more beautiful than before.” He was about to say more when they all heard the light pitter-patter of children’s feet touching the floor and quickly rushed back to their places. “Micha, what are you doing down here?” asked a sleepy voice. Micha purred and glanced up at the gingerbread house just in time to catch the wink of the Gingerbread Man.
