Are there other chemicals in commercial use that are endocrine disruptors?
Currently, there are no standard tests to determine if a particular substance is an endocrine disruptor. Both the Clean Water Act and the Food Quality Protection Act (1996) required the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to develop test methods.
Researchers are looking into some additional chemicals widely used in the production of household products to determine whether these chemicals are endocrine disruptors. Results of the studies will enable scientists to hone in on dangerous endocrine disruptors that should be removed from the marketplace.
Although not all the information is in, some chemicals of current concern include:
Glycol ethers, which are solvents that can be found in some paint, cleaning products, brake fluids, and some cosmetics. They are linked with decreased fertility in painters and may damage the fertility of an unborn child, according to the European Union.
Parabens, which are common additives to beauty and cosmetic products. They are a family of compounds coming under increased scrutiny and concern as endocrine disruptors. Found in shampoos, conditioners, deodorants, cleansers, facial scrubs, eye makeup, and lotions, they are preservatives that discourage the growth of microbes. Current research centers on their possible links to breast cancer.
