Chapter 11: Picking Sides

For a split second the next morning, I couldn’t remember anything. A tiny second of blissful ignorance. Then it all came rushing back.

Rehab. That goddamn tape.

I shut my eyes tight, trying to prevent all the memories and emotions overwhelming me. But it was too late. Tears pricked my eyes and I turned in my bed. If only I could stay there for a little longer.

But there were things that needed to be done. I had to talk to Bryan.

Steph was still sleeping soundly. I debated whether I should tell her what happened, but I decided to wait and see what Bryan planned to do with it all. Checking my phone and the time, I glimpsed a notification from Bryan’s blog.

“Well, crap.” I mumbled and opened the notification.

Glitz and Glamour of the Lie

Good morning, dear readers! I have a confession to make, a rumour to spread about yours truly.

It seems that I have fallen under the spell of Astley’s diamonds. Much like staring at the sun for too long makes you blind to everything else.

I, too, am a human, despite my otherworldly charm. And I, too, have been hoping there was still some quality in the glitter of the presented gold. It turns out, to my dismay, I was wrong.

So, I ask the Astley elite – what happened?

Where did the honour go? What happened to integrity? Your grandparents, those most likely responsible for your obscene wealth, cared about these things. Hell, even the mafia protected their own.

All you seem to care about is pushing other people down in order to get what you want, even if these people happened to be your friends, your family.

I have decided I wouldn’t be the perpetrator of this behaviour. So, with a heavy heart, I am announcing my resignation. You can expect one more message from me in the foreseeable future, but after that, I’m gone.

If you think that is going to save your secrets, you’re wrong. I will not add to your humiliation, but I will show you what you truly are.

And just in case you were wondering, I’m keeping the dirtiest you’ve got for myself.

Without further ado, here is a list of everyone who tipped yours truly with a piece of information that hurt their friend. All these things are something I never posted.

It went on like that for three whole pages. I sighed and rubbed my eyes. So, Bryan decided to stop blogging. Chiara’s tape must have shaken him hard.

I made myself get up, trying to shift my emotions into anger. Anger was good. Anger made you do stuff. Sadness made you sleep and cry and that was not what I wanted.

So, I got up and put on jeans and a white shirt. I grabbed some coffee for Bryan and me in the restaurant before heading to Bryan’s room. I didn’t know whether Chiara came back to Astley last night.
