I thought sheâd say more than she did. I just spilled my damn guts to her, which is something Iâve never done with a girl, and she responds with âweâre going yard-sale shoppingâ? What? Sometimes, often actually, I wonder if Iâm just wasting my time, but then I glance at her, like now, and I swear to God sheâs the most beautiful girl Iâve ever seen.
Sheâs laid back in the passenger seat, window down with her ankles crossed and propped on the doorframe, boots out cutting through the wind as we drive down back roads. Older country music like George Strait is playing on the radio and the warm air is blowing in the car from outside.
Occasionally, she leans toward the door and sticks her hand out like the wing of an airplane, letting herself feel what her boots are blockingâthe wind against her skin. Sheâs said little but seems at peace. And almost every time I look her way, she has the hint of a smile present, as if she can feel me watching her. Two thin slivers of hair hang in front of her ears outside of her cap, the rest pulled back through the rear hole and hanging long in a ponytail. Sheâs wearing shades now, the sun beaming in through the windshield, making her expression mostly unreadable.
I want her with an intensity I donât completely understand. I didnât even mean to react the way I did earlier. Thatâs the exact reason I stopped at the front of the vehicle to calm the hell down. When we finally fell asleep last night, I had a dream that felt so real I could taste it. School had already begun. It was summer but getting closer to fall, and it was night out, bringing in a few hours of cooler weather. It was game day.
I was taking my place on the field when I looked up into the sea of black and goldâour schoolâs colorsâof the student section and saw her, smiling at me and waving a sign in the air she made with my name and number on it. Her voice stood out above the masses or either I was so in tune with her that I heard it. Even from the distance I could see her perfectly. Long blonde hair, tight black shirt, and light-wash jeans I already knew had every guy within a hundred-foot-radius looking at her ass.
My heart was pounding. My adrenaline was rushing. And I was sweating. My smile was quickly spreading like wildfire. She was my girl. And there were feelings of happiness and contentment that Iâve never experienced. I had done it. I had attained the unattainable. Karsyn Davies was all mine. We were the talk of the campus, or at least Frat Row. That girl was everything to me. I could feel it in my bones. We were slowly taking on the world together.
When I woke up to my phone ringing, I realized I was still in her bed on her daddyâs ranch, and I was still fighting to make that dream a reality.
