Garrick lay in the moss, chewing on a blade of grass. A faun snored to his right, mead beaded in his beard. To his left, Lizzie sat cross-legged, contemplating the sky.
âYouâre more fun than I expected,â the rusalka said. âI never guessed you had a wild streak.â
âIâm not sure I did,â Garrick admitted. âNot untilâ¦â he trailed away.
âYou came to the forest,â Lizzie finished, nodding. Her face split in that familiar look of dark mischief. âBut what would your dear Danaera say? I take it she wasnât the nymph who you wereâ¦â
âNo,â Garrick grunted, cutting the rusalka off. âThat wasnât her.â
He glanced at the young woman who sprawled across his shins, shame smoldering in his gut.
Iâm so sorry, Danaera. Iâm not sure what came over me.
âGods,â moaned Pequeni, strolling up. Garrick hadnât seen much of the trenti during the festivities. âDonât get him started on Danaera. Itâs unbearable.â
âWell, it seems like he took a stride toward getting over her just now,â Lizzie said.
âNever,â Garrick murmured.
âThis nymph yer chasing,â said one of the few conscious fauns, who lounged nearby. Flavian, Garrick recalled the nymphs calling him. âThis Danaera. I know all the nymphs in these parts. Never heard of her.â
Fragments of Garrickâs tale of woe had spilled out during the festivities, coaxed from him by his nymph lover. He hadnât realized Flavian had been paying attention.
âYou canât have met them all,â he said, adding ââ¦right?â when the faun looked skeptical.
âMet most of âem,â Flavian said. âMet âem close anâ personal.â He winked broadly. âNever met this one.â
âWell, still,â said Garrick, crestfallen. âI know sheâs in here.â
âEh,â said Flavian, spreading his hands. âMore like her about, Iâm sure. Like Cassiopeia there. No use dwellinâ on just one.â
The nymph lying across Garrickâs legs moaned on cue. Heartsick, Garrick rolled her off him. âWrong. Thereâs no one like Danaera.â
âEh,â Flavian said again, plucking moss and flicking it absently.
âCan you think of anywhere I could look?â Garrick asked. Pequeni started to answer, but Flavianâs gruff voice drowned him out.
âFauns anâ nymphs,â he said, âWeâre not, whatâs the word, stationary. Donât have a home. Go where we please. Sometimes we bump into other groups like ours, like last night. Then we part ways anâ off we go again.â He groped for a bottle, found it empty, and tossed it aside with a snort. âNo point lookinâ any one place.â
âCan I come with you?â Garrick asked, again overriding Pequeni. âMaybe⦠eventually⦠you might meet a group Danaera has attached herself toâ¦â
âEh.â Flavian scratched his beard. âHave a human tag along? I dunno about that.â He kicked a nearby faun with one shaggy hoof. âWhat say you, Giles?â
Giles groaned in protest and rolled over.
âNot sure you could keep up,â Flavian said. âNot sure youâd have the stamina.â He showed his teeth, broad and crooked.
âHeâs right,â Pequeni interjected before Garrick could protest. âWe need to go see Sheoran. Sheoran can help you.â
âSo youâve said,â Garrick said irritably. âWho is this Sheoran, anyway? Why do you think he can help me?â
âI donât think he can, mate, I know he can.
