Chapter 7

Adam skirted the cabins and made his way to the kitchens. He felt certain and safe there. The comforting presence of Dominiq and the fact that he didn’t have to talk or feel awkward was half the battle. Luckily, Scott hadn’t followed him when he left. What would he have done if Scott had decided he wanted to talk? What would Adam have said?

“Hey, little man,” Dominiq said from the large walk-in fridge. “You doing good?” Adam smiled at the affectionate nickname. He was five nine and didn’t consider himself really short, but then anyone was little compared to the big dude in the chef’s whites.

“Did you want any help?”

Dominiq scanned the kitchen. “You can get on with the salads if you like. Dinner is in an hour, it’s only staff tonight.”

Adam washed up and grabbed a clean chef’s coat. Intent on chopping greens, he was soon lost in thought. That kiss had been pure and sweet and hot, and then Scott had pushed him away. Of course he would push him away. Adam knew he wasn’t the person Scott wanted or needed. He was okay with that. He hadn’t expected rainbows and ponies when he found Scott—just closure.

Then he’d flinched. Great.

Scott had moved to touch him, but he had such an expression of intensity on his face that it freaked Adam out. Brought back memories of the encounters in prison that he’d managed to get away from only because he was small and fast. It also brought back the even more recent memory of Scott knocking him to the floor. He couldn’t wait to get off the island.

He placed small cherry tomato halves in a bowl and tossed them in a vinaigrette that he concocted from oils and vinegar. Humming to himself, he wasn’t even aware that Dominiq was next to him until the gruff voice was right in his ear asking him if he had moved the salt.

Adam ducked in shock, then stumbled back against the surface and slipped on his ass. His heart threatened to beat out of his chest, and he couldn’t speak.

“Jeez, son, I’m sorry.” Dominiq held out a hand to help him stand, but Adam wasn’t quite ready to reach out and instead shrunk away. Dominiq crouched down, probably in an effort to appear smaller to Adam. Who the hell knew. All that he was aware of was the tumbled spread of cherry tomatoes and slick dressing and the fact Dominiq’s shoe was buried deep in the squished red fruit. His heart refused to stop racing. Stupid. Freaking stupid. What the hell is wrong with me?

“What happened?” Scott’s voice broke through the anxiety in Adam’s head, and Adam added acute embarrassment to the panic attack. Dominiq moved so he was between Adam and Scott.

“Nothing,” he said brusquely.

“Is Adam okay?” Scott asked. Adam couldn’t figure out if Scott sounded pissed or sympathetic or just plain confused.

“Get the hell out of my kitchen, Scott,” Dominiq stated simply.

“Dom—”

“Out.”

Adam bowed his head in the absolute shame of what had just happened, and he didn’t know if Scott had left or not.
