Chapter Five

On Saturday morning, Jim climbed out of bed while Len was still sleeping so he could get ready for his morning ride with his favorite horse. In order to keep his workouts from becoming too routine, Jim often switched things around by riding one morning, jogging another, and working out with free weights at least two mornings a week in the new home gym they'd installed in the basement. The big old Spanish Mission style main house was still a work in progress, and it was always difficult to maintain the original details, but they continued to make improvements and changes constantly. And always with the mindset that they wanted the house to remain as close to its original form as possible. There were not that many grand old historical homes left with bell towers, arches, and handmade tiles.

He rode out to the end of the ranch, beyond the creek near the woods, and out to a wide pasture that backed up to the gay dude ranch they owned next door. He rode a little further and stopped at the dude ranch to have coffee with Caleb, Len's younger brother. Caleb, the ex-priest, was the only one in the family not spending Christmas with them. He had recently met a guy from San Francisco and he was leaving for the airport that morning. It always stunned Jim a little to see Caleb, because he looked almost identical to Len's deceased son, Cain.

They talked about family, about the employees who would work over the holidays and deal with the paying guests at the dude ranch, and about how much Cain seemed to be embracing his new life as an openly gay man after so many years in the closet as a Catholic priest. After that, they hugged each other and Jim rode back to the creek where he'd spread the ashes of a few people he'd loved the most in life, including Cain, and he paid his silent respects. He didn't linger there for long.

On the ride home, it was cooler than usual and he was glad he'd worn a leather jacket and Len's favorite cowboy hat. The sky was that deep shade of morning blue he remembered from being a kid in Texas. Only people from Texas could understand this. On mornings like this, he often missed Texas and it comforted him to know they'd made the right choice by buying the ranch in Chatsworth. At least he had the best of both worlds living there, because Chatsworth reminded him of many things he missed in Texas. In this sense, Jim was like his dad: once from Texas, always from Texas.

He returned to the barn an hour later because he knew Culum was being dropped off at the house at ten. He wanted time to shower and dress for the day, so he could take Culum up to the attic rooms, behind the bell tower, and look for Christmas decorations for the back of the house.

After he climbed down
