The kitchen was a mess when Benji and I got back downstairs after our shower. Aunt Rowena had moved the potions from the attic to the kitchen. She stood at the island, crushing blue kyanite chunks into smaller shards with a meat cleaver. Julian and Roman stood near her, breaking off sections of the stones with their bare hands while Raven and Hazel sprinkled the shards Aunt Rowena made into the potions. Ivette and Octavia were at the dining room table, working on busting up the selenite so it could be added in next.

All eyes shifted to Benji and me when we entered the kitchen. My face burned through twenty shades of red as I avoided everyone’s stare, knowing they all had either heard us—thanks to their vampire hearing—or had assumed what happened between Benji and me while we’d been gone.

“All right.” Benji rubbed his hands together, somehow not seeming to care about the obvious. “Tell me what you want me to do.”

“Not be so loud next time for starters,” Octavia insisted without glancing up from what she was doing. Her voice sounded flat and bored, but her words had been enough to send my heart beating into overdrive and my ears to catch on fire. “What? I’m only saying what everyone is thinking.” Her lips twisted into a wicked smirk.

I didn’t think I’d ever been more mortified in my whole life.

“Ridley, why don’t you add selenite shards to these potions. We’ve already added the blue kyanite to them,” Raven said, ending the drawn-out silence and my ever-growing mortification.

I stepped to where Ivette and Octavia had already broken down some of the crystal tower.

“Benji, you can—” Raven paused in what she’d been about to say as the sound of gravel crunching beneath tires sounded from outside. “Would Mina and her pack be here so soon?” she asked me.

“That doesn’t sound like Mina’s car,” Benji insisted. “It sounds like something bigger.”

The sound of someone slamming a vehicle door shut filtered through the kitchen.

“It’s one person,” Julian said. “And from the sounds of their footfalls, they’re taller and heavier than Mina.”

A lump formed in my throat. Who was here? Another of Bram’s zombies? No. Couldn’t be. Zombies couldn’t drive. Unless he had a rune for that too...

A knock sounded at the front door. Everyone remained still. I knew it was because we were all thinking the same thing—was this Bram’s next move?

“I’ll see who it is,” I said, sounding braver than I felt. I smoothed my clammy hands against my jean-clad thighs and made my way to the front door. Benji went with me.

My heart thundered as a shadow moved in front of the frosted window cut into the door. Whoever it was looked as though they were walking away. I listened to their footsteps on the stairs of the porch. The engine of a vehicle cranked to life and then gravel crunched as they drove away.

“That was weird,” I said. “They must have dropped something off.”

“Maybe.” Benji stepped closer. I could feel the coolness of his body pressing against my backside as I stood facing the door.
