The moral of the tale

The example above is an extreme one. But the moral of the tale runs true. Any change effort must first establish how compatible it is with the values and behaviours of the impacted parties. Do the skills, temperaments, and mindsets of the change recipients align? Do they support adoption of the change? The bigger the gap, the harder it will be to make the change. Not impossible. But you need a clear conversation with senior leaders if the gap is wide. One that calls out how big that gap is and what it will take to bridge it. How many people are you prepared to swap out, or even could you? Or is this a non-negotiable change? Have things really got to a point that the organisation has to shed employees to stay afloat? Has a conversation with those employees happened to explore alternatives? Is there a prospect of large-scale redundancy, and if there is, how aligned to the organisation’s professed culture and values is this option?
