EIGHTEEN

Celia

The car had barely come to a stop when Celia flung herself from the passenger seat. It felt like it’d taken them hours to reach Simon’s tattoo shop, but they’d arrived in less than twenty minutes. Anything could’ve happened to him during that time. Another round of her father’s goons could’ve arrived to finish him off. For that matter, he could’ve bled out.

Dex scrambled behind her, and she halted mid-step when she spotted Simon’s shredded clothes discarded near his motorcycle. Droplets of bright-red blood stained them. Panic blurred through her mind, leaving behind one thought. She had to get to Simon.

The lights in the shop were off, but she hit the door at a dead run and was brought to an abrupt halt when the locked door didn’t budge.

“Simon!” The evident terror in her voice alarmed Celia, but she couldn’t dismiss the very real fear that she’d lost one of her three bears.

“I smell him this way, sweetheart.” Dex pointed toward his mechanic side of the building.

Celia ran. The sound of Dex’s steps thumped loud behind her. She spied Nick already standing in the shadows next to a lump on the ground. Why hadn’t he alerted her to Simon’s whereabouts instead of letting her try the shop door?

Before she reached them, the lump on the ground shifted, and she caught sight of fur, ears, and a snout. Then the black bear morphed into a man. Any other time, she’d have been fascinated by his shifter appearance and watching his transformation into man. At the moment, all that mattered was his wellbeing.

She paused to gauge his injuries.

“He’s fine,” Nick said. “Good as new.”

“You brought—” Simon oomphed when she tackled him in a hug “—her to a murder scene?” Zero hesitation, he hugged her to his bloody frame. “You’re losing your alpha-touch, Nick.” Celia didn’t care what Nick’s reaction was to that. Instead, she managed not to wrinkle her nose in disgust at the coppery odor of blood mixed with Simon’s woodsy scent. “I’m okay, love.”

“I was so scared.” She kissed his neck and squeezed him harder, relieved by the sound of his breathing and the warmth of his chest.

“You’re getting blood all over you.”

“I don’t care.”

“I care. I don’t want you to ever see grizzly scenes like this again. The taint of it shouldn’t touch you.”

“I only care you’re okay.” Celia nuzzled her face against his neck. She’d witnessed grizzly scenes firsthand more than once, but what made this worse was that Simon was the target. “I thought I’d lost you. When I felt the bullets—”

His body tightened against hers for a brief moment. Then his fingers slid in her hair, gripping the strands and pulling her head back to peer down at her. His eyes narrowed a fraction. “You felt the bullets?”

“Yeah. I thought it was just a dream. I saw you come out of the shop, get on your bike, and order them to come out because you could smell them.” She trailed her fingertips across his cheekbones and rubbed her cheek against his beard, unable to stop touching him.
