Chapter Eight

“You remember Quinton, don’t you, Darci?” Lance said. “He’s still single, too.”

“How nice,” Darci muttered. As she tensed, Cameron’s grip tightened on her hand.

“Isn’t he adorable?” Lucy said, setting her empty wineglass on the counter. “Darn, he was great in high school, but now…”

But now Quinton Searle the fourth was more than adorable, he was gorgeous. Even Darci had to admit he still looked fabulous. His dark hair, styled in the latest cut, complemented his ruggedly handsome face, and his casual suit accented a man used to being in control. He even wore Italian shoes, and suddenly Darci found herself clinging to Cameron.

Thank goodness she had him, she thought. “Quinton,” she said as he entered their group. “Great to see you.”

“Darci,” he acknowledged in a deep, husky voice. He let his gaze travel over her, but his glance didn’t affect her as it once had, all those years ago. “It’s good to see you.”

Darci avoided answering by thrusting Cameron forward. “This is Cameron O’Brien,” she said, aware everyone was watching. “Owner of the Monitor.”

“Great little weekly,” Quinton said. He shook Cameron’s hand.

“So I’ve been told,” Cameron asserted easily.

Darci took a deep breath. Although only milliseconds lapsed, both men studied each other, sized each other up, and made an instant decision regarding the other.

That time allowed Darci to see how different, yet alike, the two men were. Quinton stood taller than Cameron, and he was broader, but Cameron’s golden looks didn’t pale under Quinton’s darker ones. If anything, Cameron became even better looking, if that were possible.

“So, how have you been, Darci?” Quinton asked, as if no one else stood in the room.

“I’ve been great. I’ve been in Boston for the past few years. I just moved home.” A frisson of heat shot through her body, and gratefully Darci squeezed the hand Cameron had looped through hers. Somehow he’d sensed she needed warmth and support.

“That’s what I heard,” Quinton replied, gesturing to the bartender for a bottled water. “My sister runs into Harry occasionally. He’ll be at the wedding tomorrow.”

That’s right, Darci thought, one of Quinton’s three sisters had been in her brother Harry’s high-school graduating class.

She gulped a sip of wine. Around her the conversations that had stopped upon Quinton’s arrival were beginning again, as if the big show had fizzled flat and become boring.

“So I hear you’re doing well,” Quinton said, bottled water in hand. “I’ve just finished all my requirements and residency. I’ve accepted a position to replace a retiring doctor, so in a few months I’ll be returning to St. Louis to practice.”

“Really?” Hearing dollar signs, Candi wiggled uninvited into the conversation. “So, private practice?”

“Yes,” he replied, not taking his gaze off Darci.

“Interesting. You must tell me all about it.” And with that—and much to Lance’s disgust—Candi didn’t give Quinton a choice as she drew him away from Darci.

Suddenly relieved from the burden of talking with Quinton, Darci’s shoulders slumped slightly as some of the tension left her.

“Doing okay?” Cameron asked in a low voice. His breath warmed her ear.
