Chapter 10

It wasn’t long before the sun began to lower even further over the horizon and was soon obscured by the inn itself. Every so often, I wandered out to see the state of the horseshoe-shaped cul-de-sac so we’d know when to strike.

On one of my many trips, I’d made sure to check on the horse in the stable around back and saw that the man from the market had already delivered the hay.

Perfect. That was one less thing we’d have to worry about if things started to go sideways.

I also made sure to grab the ropes and coiled them tightly inside the canvas bag still slung across my chest.

Every step I took outside the confines of the inn was filled with the brimming, bubbling power of the dragon relics just out of reach. I’d tried to keep my head down and not make myself known to the merchant. It helped that the area had been busy with a steady flow of people.

The area steadily grew empty, and once I was certain no one else would be outside, it was time to go.

“You’re sure I have to flirt with him?” Arden asked as we inched down the hallway of the inn toward the main area once more.

“I’m sure,” I said. “Whatever you do needs to be enough to take all of his attention off his surroundings, and keep it locked on you and you alone. The best way to do that is to take advantage of his interest in you.”

“I don’t think I know how to flirt with a man,” Arden admitted. “We just went over the fact that I’m a lesbian, right? A day ago? Earlier today? Time is weird. Recently.”

“Yes,” I said. “We did. But you got Asha to date you, right? So you have to know how to flirt, at least a little.”

“She kind of just looked at me and told me we were dating. I don’t think I flirted at all. I’m not great at it,” Arden said with a huff.

I knew she’d do what she needed to do for the greater good, however, even if she didn’t necessarily want to.

And right now, the greater good was to steal all the shit we could from that scumbag and make sure we got away with it before he could catch us.

“Just… keep his attention on you,” I said. ”And when it’s clear, Gwen and I are going to run out and around as wide as we can so he doesn’t see us. Then we sneak up behind him and take him down.”

“I really hate this plan,” Arden mumbled, but she nodded, then rolled her shoulders before looking at us at the mouth of the hallway. “I hope you two don’t mind watching something entirely embarrassing because that’s what you’re about to see. I don’t even know what men like, or know how to hit on one. Especially that one. He’s creepy and weird-looking, and I think he’s probably a little evil, and on principle, I’m not attracted to evil in a person.
