Chapter 10
It wasnât long before the sun began to lower even further over the horizon and was soon obscured by the inn itself. Every so often, I wandered out to see the state of the horseshoe-shaped cul-de-sac so weâd know when to strike.
On one of my many trips, Iâd made sure to check on the horse in the stable around back and saw that the man from the market had already delivered the hay.
Perfect. That was one less thing weâd have to worry about if things started to go sideways.
I also made sure to grab the ropes and coiled them tightly inside the canvas bag still slung across my chest.
Every step I took outside the confines of the inn was filled with the brimming, bubbling power of the dragon relics just out of reach. Iâd tried to keep my head down and not make myself known to the merchant. It helped that the area had been busy with a steady flow of people.
The area steadily grew empty, and once I was certain no one else would be outside, it was time to go.
âYouâre sure I have to flirt with him?â Arden asked as we inched down the hallway of the inn toward the main area once more.
âIâm sure,â I said. âWhatever you do needs to be enough to take all of his attention off his surroundings, and keep it locked on you and you alone. The best way to do that is to take advantage of his interest in you.â
âI donât think I know how to flirt with a man,â Arden admitted. âWe just went over the fact that Iâm a lesbian, right? A day ago? Earlier today? Time is weird. Recently.â
âYes,â I said. âWe did. But you got Asha to date you, right? So you have to know how to flirt, at least a little.â
âShe kind of just looked at me and told me we were dating. I donât think I flirted at all. Iâm not great at it,â Arden said with a huff.
I knew sheâd do what she needed to do for the greater good, however, even if she didnât necessarily want to.
And right now, the greater good was to steal all the shit we could from that scumbag and make sure we got away with it before he could catch us.
âJust⦠keep his attention on you,â I said. âAnd when itâs clear, Gwen and I are going to run out and around as wide as we can so he doesnât see us. Then we sneak up behind him and take him down.â
âI really hate this plan,â Arden mumbled, but she nodded, then rolled her shoulders before looking at us at the mouth of the hallway. âI hope you two donât mind watching something entirely embarrassing because thatâs what youâre about to see. I donât even know what men like, or know how to hit on one. Especially that one. Heâs creepy and weird-looking, and I think heâs probably a little evil, and on principle, Iâm not attracted to evil in a person.
