I’ve been leaning against the hood of my car for the past ten minutes and there’s no sign of Ichabod. Something tells me he’s going to be more trouble than he’s ever been worth sooner rather than later, but I like to play games myself, so I can’t exactly fault him for it.

I raise my eyes toward the sky for a moment, a grin starting to spread across my lips. I wonder what fantasies Jizz Ball has been filling his head with.

That’s what all of these zealots do, regardless of denomination—they whisper little nothings into the ears of the unsuspecting and impressionable. They promise forever while I’m more into the right now.

It’s why I never could get behind any of this shit.

Too many hollow promises, not enough action.

But Ichabod … he’s gonna fall for this shit hook, line, and sinker, I think irritably as I lower my gaze and let it settle on the back door of the church again. I should have helped Trixie burn this place to the fucking ground when she asked me to, but it seems that she beat me to it and they still managed to fix it up.

They’re resilient but so am I, and I know that’s something Jizz and her hulking gorilla boy aren’t expecting.

Sucking my teeth, I push myself off the hood of my car and take a step toward the church. Sometimes, the best way children learn their hardest lessons is to let them fall then stand back up on their own.

The temptation to let Ichabod fall flat on his face and get back up with scrapes, bruises, and busted teeth is strong; however, I know the little shit wouldn’t leave me behind, so I’ll be nice.

Just this once.
