Chapter 17

Caroline awakened in her bed and stretched. How good it felt to be sleeping in the room she’d had since she was young girl. She reached for a pillow and hugged it to her chest as daylight peeked through the curtains at the window.

Last night she had spent the evening talking with her mother and telling her about Oklahoma City and how everyone was so glad they were now a state. Her mother had inquired about Stuart, but Caroline had chosen to share only a small portion of what had happened with him. Her fingers touched her lips as she remembered the kiss. That she didn’t want to share with anyone just yet.

She pulled her stockings over her feet and slipped them into soft shoes before padding across the floor to the wardrobe. After she finished dressing, she made her way downstairs, where delicious smells wafted from the kitchen. Cinnamon rolls, and homemade ones at that. Ruby must have started them last night.

Her father glanced up from his paper. “Happy Thanksgiving, princess. Did you sleep well?”

She settled into the chair on his left and reached for her napkin. “Yes, very well. It’s nice to be home again.”

Her mother swept in with a swish of her skirts and stopped to kiss Caroline’s forehead as she had done every morning when Caroline had been a child. Some things never changed. “Good morning, Mother.”

Ruby entered bearing eggs, bacon, and her cinnamon rolls on a tray. She deposited them on the table, and Caroline breathed deeply. “I love the smell of your rolls, Ruby. Thank you for making them for me.”

Ruby’s face beamed and tinged pink. “’Tis a pleasure it is to be baking for ye again. And ’tis nice to have ye home for the holiday.”

She pushed through the door to the kitchen, and Caroline bowed her head as her father bowed his. Saying grace was another habit she’d dropped in recent days. It seemed every meal was eaten in such a hurry or at a restaurant and she had no time for it. Hearing her father’s rich baritone voice now as he thanked God for the food stirred guilt in her soul. Well, she’d be in church this Sunday, and then she’d catch up on spiritual matters.

Her mother began discussing the meal for the day and what time it would be served. Caroline let her mind wander back to Oklahoma City. Stuart would be enjoying a meal with his parents, who had come home for the holidays from their place in Washington. Caroline had only met them twice, and Mrs. Whittington had reminded her of Mother in her manner of speech and knowledge of proper etiquette. Of course as a senator’s wife, she had to know those things, and she had seemed genuinely interested in Caroline.

Life with Stuart would be much like the one she had growing up, but in a larger city and with more people. One thing she vowed to do was to treat all people equally. Through her time with Jo she had learned how wonderful it was to help others.
