The only light inside the house was a faint glow in the front window. Adam stopped the horse close to the house but never moved to dismount. Caroline didn’t move either. Her heart had been pounding since they left the ranch and more than once, Adam had started to say something but held back. Her foolish heart said he was trying to find a way to ask for her hand but every second he said nothing, she started to doubt he ever would.
Was it because of what Marcus said? She clenched her jaw, anger at him making her mad enough to spit. How dare he say such a bold thing when it was absolutely not true. Did Adam believe him? The longer he sat there saying nothing, the more she thought maybe he had.
She sighed and looked toward the house. “I should go in.”
He nodded and dismounted, then reached up to help her down, his hands once again settling at her waist. Those butterflies took flight when she placed her hands on his shoulders and she inhaled deeply to calm her nervous stomach.
When her feet touched the ground, neither of them moved. She didn’t pull away, instead, left her hands on his shoulders. His gaze roamed her face, the heat from his body warming her clean to her toes. Ask me to marry you, Adam. When he looked at her lips, she wondered if he was going to kiss her and silently begged him to do just that. To her disappointment, he let go of her and took a step back instead. “Come Caroline, I’ll walk you to the door.”
She nodded and turned to the house. At the door, she smiled up at him. “Thank you for seeing me home.”
“It was my pleasure.”
Much bolder than she should have been, Caroline rose up on her toes and kissed his cheek, lingering to see if he’d do anything other than stand there. When he didn’t, she sighed and stepped to the door. “Goodnight, Adam.”
“Goodnight Caroline.”
The wick in the lamp sitting on the mantle was just bright enough to see inside the room. The house was quiet. Julia and Matthew were already in bed.
Caroline hung her cloak and leaned back against the door. What was she supposed to do now? The ranch house was gone. Marcus said he’d rebuild it but did she really want to be his wife? No, I don’t. She’d rather go back to war-torn Charleston than spend her life with him.
Adam’s face filled her mind’s eye, and she sighed. He was who she wanted. Just thinking about him made her heart race, but he didn’t seem to be taking her hints at marriage. She’d thought he was interested. Had even believed he was going to kiss her when he walked her to the door but he’d told her goodnight and walked away instead.
Should she be bold and just ask him if he’d marry her instead? She chewed her bottom lip and imagined the conversation in her head. No. I die of humiliation if he said no and anyone ever found out.
