Fever Dream

Meg

For a moment, time stood still inside the black and white big top. Every eye in the tent was fixed on me. The air thickened with an intense cluster-fuck of emotions that had my head spinning. Fear. Lust. Shock. Respect—That was a new one.

I'd just murdered someone. It wasn't the first time. I'd killed the ghoul in the haunt for assaulting that poor bunny shifter, and I'd cut up the three haunt workers for trying to do the same to me until they were nothing but puddles of piss and blood. But this was different. This monster had been an innocent.

This was the part where guilt was supposed to kick in.

I waited. Nothing. Not so much as an iota of regret. Maybe because he'd purposefully bought a death seat with the intent of being sent to Hell in style.

No. That explained the lack of guilt, not the wicked glee I'd felt seeing his blood bloom from his body and spread between my bare toes.

I pushed off the troubling thought; just another thing to unpack later.

Riff and Raff were still on their knees, looking so damn delectable with their leather masks drenched in my arousal. I crouched in front of them, pretending I was just gathering their chain leashes in my hand, but I was getting close enough to hear their muffled praises.

"That was so fucking sexy," Riff groaned.

Raff nodded his agreement. "First death seat kill. That's a cause for celebration."

I swallowed back a laugh. "Celebrate how? A party? Weed? More sex? We do that all the time anyway."

Raff's attention darted to the edge of the ring, and his green brows shot up in surprise. A breath later, the wrinkles at the corners of his eyes betrayed the smile beneath his mask. "I can think of something the three of us haven't done together yet."

Riff followed his line of sight, a curse in Infernal falling from the hole in his mask.

I turned to see what it was that had the incubi, so speechless.

Daemon strode across the ring, looking like some kind of feral demon who'd just fought his way out of Hell. He was shirtless, his dark, wet hair slicked back behind his ears, wearing black pants that were undone and slung low on his hips. He'd been hurt badly. The gauze wrapping his abdomen was working hard to keep his guts in, and still, that didn't stop the cocky stride in his step as he approached.

Blood seeped from the bandages, streaking the defined V of his hips in blood. A thin sheen of sweat made his tattooed flesh glisten under the lights, and his citrine eyes burned like freshly smelted gold as they met my stare.

The atmosphere in the ring buzzed with his brutal eminence.

He was...fucking beautiful.

I wanted to throw myself into his arms and kiss him. I had a hundred questions ready to fire off. Where had he been? How had he gotten so hurt? Now that he was here, Alistair needed to follow through on his promise of telling me all his secrets.
