Chapter Six

Lily

Lily stared at the slightly pinkish moon in the sky and sighed. She wanted to kick off her shoes, strip naked, and bathe in the gorgeous moonlight to calm her racing mind. She didn’t know why, as she had never actually bathed in the moonlight, but she just knew it would calm her down. It was something she always wanted to do but never acted on. Like a lot of things in her life. She always made up some sort of excuse as to why she couldn’t. But she knew deep down inside what the real reason was.

She was a fool, a scared fool. In all aspects of her life, even now, her self-proclaimed mate was inside, waiting for her return. And what did she do after almost giving in, after finally stilling her racing mind and seeing that the growing magical bond between them was actually real?

She ran away to sit on an uncomfortable cement step, thinking up lame excuses for why she couldn’t be his mate. She didn’t even want to think of the remains of magic swirling inside of her from the kiss they shared. Something she had all but given up on ever feeling.

A mate and magic waited for her inside, if only she had the nerve to take the first step. Lily’s thoughts skittered back and forth until a feminine bellow echoed out into the night. “Lilyyyyy, wait for meeeeee.”

The mad clacking of heels running down the steps interrupted her thoughts as Sasha plopped down next to her with a large grin plastered across her face. Lily shied away, not wanting Hunter’s sister to see the doubt clouding her mind. “Did my m…, er, Hunter send you to watch me?”

Lily had almost slipped, calling Hunter her mate. It already felt so natural and good. So why was she fighting so hard against it? Sasha snorted at her almost slip but didn’t call her out on it.

“My brother is inside making sure part two of this shindig starts rolling. Speaking of which, are you going to do it?”

Lily blinked. “Do what?”

“The chase and accept my brother as your mate.”

Her eyes grew wide at the question, her mind already spitting out reasons why she couldn’t, even as her body turned to mush just thinking about it. Sasha held up her hand before Lily was able to speak. “How about this… tell me what you are worried about. Ask me all your burning questions and maybe my answers can easy your mind.”

Lily felt a bit of weight lift off her chest and nodded. She asked the one question that had been skittering across her mind from the start. “Do I have a choice?”

Sasha’s face softened, her grin falling into a slight lip tilt. She reached out to grab Lily’s hand. “Of course, you do. You can walk away right now. You don’t have to accept the mate bond.”

Lily felt the sweet rush of relief pass through her. She had a choice. She could walk away. That was, until she thought about Hunter going out and mating with another woman.
