ELEVEN

SILAS

I haven’t been in this basement in days. It feels foreign as I step out of the elevator, Parker right by my side.

I've never brought someone down here alive and well. Some stupid part of my brain is telling me to keep Hawthorne safe. My little dove.

This carnival isn’t just for fun and games—the real fun is underground, right under everyone's noses. This basement is where us carnies get to have our real fun while those above ground frolic around like everything is safe and normal.

David was an impulse kill. Usually, I prefer to take my time and really let their screams sing out for no-one but me to hear, but I had to show my little dove just how committed I was to looking out for his best interests.

This basement is responsible for over 100 missing persons cases still floating around this town, all of them forgotten and ignored. It’s my perfect setup for my favorite hobby: torture and death.

This room is meant to bend and break and test every limit. The real haunted house starts here. We’ve been doing this for years, Parker and me. We use to have another member, but he broke off on his own to live in an asylum up the road.

Excitement surges through me watching Hawthorne take in the space. His pupils are blown out, his jaw tense. I hear his breathing hitch as he notices the hallway ahead of us, rusty chains hanging in rows from the ceiling, the floor covered in layers of dried blood.

“Still trust me, little dove?” I whisper as I point Parker in the direction of the open space in front of us to put Adrianna down.

“Yeah. I know we're not down here for me,” he says in a shaky breath.

He’s right. We’re not down here for him, but I do have some fun plans for him once Adrianna is out of the way. I need to test him, to make sure he will be just as committed to me as I am to him. I know he has some darkness hidden in his skull—he just needs someone to tap into it once and for all.

“So, what’s the plan, doc?” Parker asks, situating Adrianna with a ball gag in her gaped mouth, drool pooling down her chin.

I smirk at the nickname, rolling my bottom lip between my teeth.

“I need to make a run tomorrow to get more adrenaline, so I figured we’d find a way to pass the time until she’s awake naturally. Should be about thirty minutes, give or take.”

Parker shrugs, leaning against the wooden beam beside him. My gaze meets Hawthorne, who’s still taking in his surroundings.

“Hey, little dove?” I ask, reaching my hand out to tug on his shirt.

“Yeah?” he answers quietly, rapidly blinking.

I smile softly, putting on my best mask. “I like this color shirt on you.” His cheeks burn pink, his lips curling into a soft smile as he runs his fingers through his hair.

“Thank yo—”

“Take it off.”

Hawthorne doesn’t waste a second as he strips out of his shirt and tosses it to the ground.
