I woke to the feeling of something poking me in the side. I swatted at it with my hand but all I heard was the sound of giggles and feet running down the hallway. I held still knowing he would come creeping back in to poke me again.

Sure enough, I heard the sound of Oliver creeping back down the hall and into his bedroom. Little giggles escaped his mouth as he was unable to keep his happiness inside. I cracked my eyes the barest amount to see him pressing his hand to his mouth as he reach out to poke my side again.

Faster than he could react, I reached out and wrapped my hands around his waist, tugging him into bed on top of me. He shrieked when I reached for him so suddenly before dissolving into laugher as he rolled around on top of me and my hands tickled his sides.

“Daddy!”

“Someone poked me! Was it you?” I growled playfully as I tickled him some more.

“No, Daddy! It was a monster!”

“A monster?” I looked over the side of the bed at the floor causing Oliver to giggle again. “What did he look like?”

“Well…” Oliver said looking around the room for inspiration. “He was big and yellow.” Oliver nodded seriously. “He had fangs too and a long tail.”

I looked over at the small, stuffed lion he had sitting on his dresser. “That sounds scary.”

“It was,” he said earnestly.

“Well then, I better protect my little boy.” Before he could do anything, I pushed him down on the bed and pulled the covers over us both much to Oliver’s delight. “Do you think he’s gone?”

“Let me look,” Oliver said as he rolled over, stuck his butt into the air, and peeked around the room. He pulled himself back under and turned to me solemnly. “He’s still there, Daddy.”

“How do we get him to go away?” I asked knowing Oliver was up to something.

“Kisses,” he said with a satisfied smile.

“Kisses?”

“Yes, kisses. The monster doesn’t like kisses. It’ll make him disappear.”

I hid my smile and nodded gravely. “Come here, Sunshine, and kiss me.”

He smiled and climbed into my lap. Placing his hands on my cheeks, he pressed little kisses to my mouth. It was the perfect way to start the day—Oliver in my lap and sweet kisses on my lips.

The sound of Oliver’s tummy rumbling filled the room. He pulled back and blushed.

“Someone’s hungry,” I said pushing him off my lap and flipping the blanket off us. I looked around the room for Oliver’s monster. “I think the kisses worked, no monsters here.”

Oliver looked around and smiled. “It worked. Can I have waffles?”

“Yes you can,” I said then patted his butt when he scrambled out of bed. I couldn’t resist, it was just so cute and there.

I followed the sounds he made to the kitchen to find him pulling strawberries and bananas out of the refrigerator. After last night, I was familiar with his kitchen so I steered him toward the counter where his crayons and coloring book waited for him.
