Caress of Fur

“Mai it’s me.” Vencel called out as soon as he walked back into the house. “Everything is all right. I’m coming up the stairs, put the gun down now.”
He could hear her moving in the bathroom but didn’t hear the sound of the gun being laid down. Concern struck his heart, and he raced up the stairs two at a time. “Nyuszikam, are you all right?”
“Yes.” The lock on the bathroom door clicked, and she poked her head around the crack. When she saw Vencel, she breathed a long sigh of relief. He heard the slight clunk when she placed the gun on the tiled counter. Part of him wanted to congratulate her for thinking of her safety first, but it was overruled by the need to comfort her. He opened his arms, and she ran into them. Jumping into his arms, she wrapped her arms around his neck and her legs around his waist.
“I was so scared, and I’m not certain why.” He kissed her for being so very brave. She must have been picking up on his and Gaspar’s concern. Could their bond be that strong already? “I told you there was nothing to worry about.”
“Where is Gaspar?”
“He’s out running and trying to work off some of his aggravation.
His wolf prowled too close to the surface, and he didn’t want to frighten you any more than you already were.”
“That’s thoughtful, but really if we are going to be together for a while, then you guys need to let me see all aspects of you. Not only the parts you are willing to show me…”
“I’ll remember that.” He walked over to the bed and lay her down on it. Those assholes had ruined his morning snack, and he decided to make up for it. Mai flopped back on the bed with a smile.
“Looks like I need to unwrap you again.”
“Does that make me your present?”
“Absolutely, and it feels like my birthday every day.” He smiled down at her, proud of the way she kept herself together. He expected her to be a crying mess by the time he came back up here, but his Mai showed him a glimpse of her ironclad soul. That she would beat these 118

panic attacks she suffered from he had no doubt. Mai didn’t know it, but he admired her strength. “Can you tell what I’m thinking right now?”
“No, should I?”
“Close your eyes.” He watched as she did as he asked and then peeled her T-shirt off her. Her eyes opened, and he could see the humor in her depths. “Close them, cheater.” Her laugh sent a bolt of pure sunshine into his heart. Now he understood why Gaspar wanted so desperately to find their mate. If he knew this is what it would be like, he would have hunted alongside him much sooner than this.
“I want you to relax.” He trailed his fingers along her collar bone and down between her breasts. “Think about the way you feel for us.
