A DIFFERENT KIND OF WHALING

Today, commercial whale watching is a worldwide phenomenon, with tourist numbers in the millions and revenues in the billions. However, whale watching as an industry has humble origins. In 1955, a San Diego fisherman—Chuck Chamberlin—put together the first modern-style whale-watching expedition. For just $1, tourists could ride on his boat and search the waters of southern California for gray whales. The idea began to spread to other fishermen, who began taking customers out to sea. Whale expert Raymond Gilmore joined the movement as well when he began offering trips led by naturalists. Soon, many people were traveling to the West Coast just to embark on a whale-watching adventure.

By the 1970s, whale-watching tours had also appeared on the East Coast, and in 1980, a Spanish fisherman began offering similar expeditions in Gibraltar Bay. Before long, whale-watching tours were also being offered in the Caribbean, South America, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan. What began as one fisherman’s attempt to make a little extra money in the offseason became a huge global industry.
