I get up before they do, my insomnia pulling me out of my sleep before I'm rested. They're exhausted from last night, so I'm careful as I get out of the bed.
I throw on one of their t-shirts. It's warm, and smells like everything male.
I shiver thinking about all the places their hands roamed last night. They explored my body as if it was the sole reason they were put on this planet for.
I'm on my way to make myself a hot drink when I come across the door. To the basement. I try to push my thoughts to the back of my mind. I know that they have something down there. Something they're keeping hidden. But it isn't right to spy on them. If they wanted to show me, they would have.
My curiosity gets the best of me as my feet carry me to the door. I open it, careful not to make a sound.
I have no idea where any of the light switches are, so I leave it open, letting the light from the living room guide my way. It's pitch black, but I take a step down. And wait. Nothing happens, so I hold the walls and descend them slowly.
Guilt eats away at my brain, but I know there's no stopping now. My toes brush against the soft carpet as I navigate my way to the dark.
I look behind me to see that I've only descended eight steps or so. It felt like an eternity though.
Just as my eyes start accommodating to the darkness, a sudden flash of light blinds me. I look behind, panicked that I got caught. I mentally prepare what I'm going to say, but there's nobody standing at the door.
The lights have switched on by themselves. I hadn't realized they were motion-detecting ones.
Now that I can see better, I descend the rest of the stairs before I can change my mind.
I'm surrounded by black monitors. At least a dozen of them. I touch one of them, and it flickers to life. It's a photo of a middle-aged man. I look away immediately, feeling like I'm taking advantage of their trust.
I have no business being here. They've treated me with respect and kindness, and I'm infringing their trust. Again. I didn't plan for it to happen this way, but I've come to actually like these men.
Cream-colored folders sit neatly stacked in the corner. I open one of them. A photo of the same man. I close it.
I open the next one. This one has some written information. At the bottom of the paper is a photo of the same man from earlier. Whatever they're working on, it centers around this man. Also, I keep seeing the letter 'X' everywhere.
My heart thuds, wondering if I got myself into another mess. Of course this would be some private FBI work area. What else did I think I would find?
"He's the one we're after," whispers a voice in my ear. I flip around, so fast I nearly trip.
