Aphrodite

I’m just about to nail Ares in the jaw when the door to the cell bursts open. I jump back and Ares swivels around stepping in front of me.

“Hello, kids! Everyone against the wall.” It’s Jef and two other men.

We all back up against the far wall. Mes ends up next to me and grabs my hand giving it a slight, reassuring squeeze.

“I’ve brought food and some clothes for the girl, where’s my thank you?” He sounds like a sarcastic ass who has probably done this a million times. No one says anything, you don’t thank your captor for anything.

“No? How about now?”

He aims the electric gun right at me and shoots. I close my eyes and grit my teeth, preparing for the pain but it never comes. Opening my eyes I see Ares on the floor in front of me shaking.

“Aw, I guess that’ll do. I’ll get you again soon anyways sweet girl.” With that, he walks out the door, locking it behind him.

I rush down to kneel at Ares’ side. “Are you okay? I can’t believe you did that. What can I do?” I’m talking too much, but I don’t know how to help.

“Nothing. I’m fine,” he starts to sit up even as shocks still rack his body, “I didn’t do it for you, just didn’t want these three to lose their shit.”

Oh, for a second there I thought maybe Ares was showing that he cares. He’s back to being an ass, an ass who saved me though.

“Fair enough,” I turn to Apollo, “can you heal him?”

He nods coming down to Ares’ side but Ares pushes him back, “no, I’m good. See I’m already fine.” He’s standing up shaking out his muscles.

Apollo steps up to me next, “let’s heal you up after your training session then.”

“No,” Ares sounds like he’s still in pain, gritting out the words, “it’s not life-threatening, let’s see if she heals on her own. If she has self-healing powers like us.”

Apollo looks to me for a decision. It makes sense, it’s just some scrapes and bruises. I give him a nod and a smile, letting him know I agree.

He looks me over, assessing if I’m telling the truth. Once he’s satisfied he gives me a nod then moves on.

I take a step over towards the bags they dropped off. A thought occurring to me.

“Why do they take care of us? Why not just throw us in a cell to rot?”

“We don’t know, things have gotten more comfortable the more people who show up. Or as comfortable as a prison can be. Mes has picked up a few thoughts about them waiting for something to happen but nothing else,” Apollo answers.

“They’re planning something, there’s a reason for it. They’re not doing it out of the goodness of their hearts,” Ares is sneering.

I’m tired of the manipulation, I don’t want to have to think through everything for the motive. I don’t want to watch people get hurt in front of me. I don’t want to get hurt myself.
