‘Again!’ Jonathan broadcasted.

The two-hundred-and-fifty strong guild moved as one, flowing through the first defensive water pattern.

‘Now, air motus three!’

Seamlessly, they flowed onto the next one, occasionally waiting for a member to correct their stance, or adjusting their neighbours as needed.

‘Fire defence six,’ Jonathan sent.

Interestingly, the Returned started moving through the motus he had yet to show them.

The patterns were older than he was. They were something he’d picked up from Joshua, the last Guardian, but he hadn’t been aware that they were as longstanding as the Returned.

Feet stomped, hands flared, and voices rang out as those who knew the move guided the others through them.

There was something stunning about watching such a large group move as one.

‘Again!’

He called three more times for a repeat before he was satisfied.

‘Stop! Take a two-minute break. You’ve all done well.’

“Generous,” Lizbeth said.

Jonathan chuckled. “Don’t want them to become complacent.”

“Good point. Why isn’t Samuel leading the session?” Lizbeth leaned in closer.

“He’s still patrolling,” Jonathan said.

Lizbeth studied him, her sightless gaze moving across his form as if she was searching for something. “Do you know why I never mourned not having vision?”

“Because you were born without it?” he asked.

She laughed, a mirthless, hollow sound. “Because I can see so much more by looking through my other senses. My friend may be off-Realm, but he is not patrolling. And you, Guardian, need to learn to lie better. Especially with the mainlanders stirring up trouble.”

“Who said I’m lying?” Jonathan tried.

“Fool me once, Guardian.” Lizbeth rose and shook her head at him.

‘Sometimes I’m not at liberty to say…’

“Then say that. But the instant you can tell me something, please do. I find I miss his company.” Lizbeth clutched her bag closer and sniffed slightly.

“Well, I have something that might help with that. Meet me after the session is done?”

Studying him once more, Lizbeth nodded and walked sedately out of the training grounds.

“Uh, Guardian?” Mu called.

‘From the top! Collis, take over calling the drills, please,’ Jonathan sent. He had a shadow to trap.
