Jean took up post beside the upstairs window that Cotton had established as their primary overwatch. Cotton had also set up Ralph in the downstairs kitchen, where he could surveil most of the eastern swath of land, but wouldn’t be seen by the opposition force. He also figured if Ralph got squirrelly and tried to turn on them, he’d hear him coming.

The idea of bringing the young man into the fold still didn’t sit right with him. However, even he had to recognize that if this Randall Eisler character showed up with more men, they would be seriously outgunned, potentially to an extent that even Cotton couldn’t fight his way out of.

There was also something about Ralph’s explanation and his behavior that seemed sincere.

April stood in the hallway with her AR at the ready. The woman looked as if she was getting some of her confidence back and shaking off the remnants of fear and adrenaline that had been flooding her system.

“How well you figure you can shoot that thing?” Cotton asked. “If it comes to it?”

“Up close, I can hit what I aim at,” April said. “Out past twenty-five meters, I can’t make any promises.”

“That’ll have to do,” Cotton said. “I ain’t been in many gun fights that went out past twenty-five meters, anyway. Hell, most were inside of ten.”

“What do you think about this?” April asked. “He said more people are coming.”

“I reckon they are,” Cotton said with a nod. “Even if it’s true, all we have to do is hold out until dark.”

“Then you can take them?”

“Probably not,” Cotton said. “Even with night vision, you hit a point where the fight’s just too stacked against you. If I’m going up against twenty, thirty guys, even if they mostly can’t see me coming, they’ll eventually get lucky.”

“So, what’s the plan?”

“We’ll sneak out,” Cotton said. “Same way we moved last night.”

“What about Ralph?” April asked.

Cotton could see that she was worried about the idea of taking the young man with them.

“Jury’s still out on him,” Cotton said. “As it stands right now, we don’t take him. I need to see something from him before we go taking that kind of risk.” He paused. “Just like I saw something out of you.”

April nodded her understanding.

“Mind if I ask something?” April asked.

“More personal questions?” Cotton replied with a smile.

“Kind of. I just noticed you two speak sign language.”

Cotton’s face changed.

“You don’t have to tell me why,” April said quickly. “I should stop asking so many questions, maybe.”

“No, it’s fine,” Cotton said. “Her grandmother, my mother, was deaf. Jean learned when she was young, mostly by watching me and her Gaga talk.”

“Gaga?” April asked.

“Grandma. That was what she called her.”

“Where is she now?” April stopped herself. “Shit. I’m sorry. That’s not my business.”

Cotton looked down at the floor.

“Same place everyone is,” he said. “In one of the cities. Or not. Can’t say that I know. Haven’t seen or heard from her since this started.”

“I’m sorry,” April said.

“Nah,” Cotton said. “We’re curious. It’s what makes us human.
