Chapter Fourteen

Travister’s frightened eyes glistened beneath his glasses. His lip quivered but he still managed to speak. “But I-I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. I just wanted to explore. Really! I-I meant no harm.”

“It doesn’t matter what your motive was,” Roscoe sneered. “You wanted to leave, fine. Now your fate will be up to Vladifer. He will decide whether you live or die. Maybe he will let you live with the other Petikins who have been accepted into our University. Or ...” Roscoe paused as the drool on his lips multiplied. He licked his chops and grinned. “Maybe you’ll provide us with food in your own special way.”

Roscoe barked and a girl Petikin who’d been curled up in the corner jumped up and stood at attention. She had tangled black hair that grew to her waist and her splotchy face was caked with dirt. She eyed Roscoe warily as she obediently walked up to him and slightly bowed. Two dogs walked over and stood on either side of her. One of them grabbed her forearm with his teeth and held tight.

“Cuff him, Jayna,” Roscoe said. Another dog trotted over with a leather strap in its mouth that looked like a dog collar. The Petikin named Jayna waited for the first dog to release her arm, then she took the strap and looked at Travister with silent apology.

“Hands behind your back,” Roscoe instructed and Travister obeyed. Jayna wrapped the leather strap around Travister’s wrists and fastened the buckle that was on the end.

“Take him down,” Roscoe told the two other dogs. “He can wait there until Vladifer returns.”

But before they could move Blazer blocked their way. “I still don’t get it,” he growled, lowering his brows as he scowled at Roscoe. “I want to punish him now. There’s no reason to wait.”

Roscoe fixed the wolfish dog with a hard stare. “There’s more to ask this one, Blazer. No Petikin has ever wandered this far on his own. Trust me, Vladifer will want to question him when he returns. Then we will punish accordingly.”

Jayna looked miserable as she and the two dogs escorted Travister toward the entryway. A third dog followed closely behind.

“This way!” Matilda whispered and led Kinzie through a swinging door that opened to the kitchen.

Kinzie grimaced as she entered the room and encountered its sickeningly sweet smell. The floorboards were loose and rickety and soiled with dried food. The kitchen had no appliances and the lone sink contained layers upon layers of dust and grime. Bones and fragments of broken wood littered the area and in spots there were clumps of dried blood. In one corner there was what looked to be the remains of a well; a wooden bucket hung from a rope that was attached to a crank, yet there was no hole filled with water underneath.

Kinzie grabbed her nose and hurried after Matilda. She heard Philecia’s bewildered voice in the entryway, stalling the dogs as much as possible.

“I was just looking for Canine Crossings. Isn’t this it? I thought this was it.
