At least part of Hannah’s plan went as she’d hoped.

In the moments before the pandemonium began, people were reading her white paper on global cooling and seemed genuinely interested. And the animals reacted visibly poorly to the cold.

What she didn’t anticipate was just how badly they’d react. Some started making horrible noises, as though they were being tortured. This sound tore at Hannah’s heart, as she was an animal lover to the core. Her concerns for their welfare in a cooling climate was one of the prime motivating factors of her desire to change the path they were on.

She was horrified when a few of the animals fell where they stood. She couldn’t tell if they were dead or had just passed out and she didn’t have the time to wait around to find out. Her instincts as a vet-in-training made her want to stay and help, but she could see that Zachary was making a beeline toward her with fury in his eyes. Thanks to the scores of people moving around between them, he wasn’t making good progress.

Quickly, Hannah turned, grabbed her backpack, and pushed through the exit doors to the hallway behind the conference room. She raced down unfamiliar hallways looking for the way she’d come in. She thought she heard Zachary following through the door behind her, but she dared not slow to turn and look.

Finally she spotted an exit to the parking garage. She slammed against the door’s bar to open it and ran for her life.
