Chapter 12
Villy leapt to his feet, staring at the woman in the doorway. âWho the hell are you?â
âWho am I?â She yelled back indignantly. âThis is my house! Who the hell are you?â
Villy rushed forward, his demeanor totally changed. âOh! Youâre Henryâs aunt!â A smile washed over his face as hope of getting out of the Pine Barrens (not to mention, not being eaten by monstrous ghouls) presented itself.
The comely woman smirked and raised an eyebrow. âYou know my jackass nephew?â She tucked her shoulder-length brown hair behind her ears.
âHe booked me to play a show here,â said Villy. âHe said you gave him permission to use your cabin.â
The woman rolled her eyes. âTypical!â
Villy pressed on, trying to get to the point. âItâs a long story. Anyway, it doesnât matter. Do you have a cell phone? Did you drive here? We have to get awayâ¦â
âThereâs no time for that.â The woman spoke bluntly, pushing her way past him. She walked to the big wooden table and plunked down a messenger bag she had slung around her shoulder. The abrupt action mussed her red flannel shirt, exposing a tight, white tank top underneath that bulged in all of the right places. She examined the denizens of the room as she hurriedly fixed her shirt. Her eyes met with Stueyâs. He looked up and away awkwardly.
âYou donât understand!â pressed Villy. âThere are⦠things out there! Like, some kind of fucked up zombie-like people!â
Stuey rose to his feet. âYeah, and we saw some kind of weird creature, like a⦠flying demon!â
âWe think it was the Jersey Devil.â Ari looked intently at the womanâs expression, as if fully expecting sheâd think them all crazy, but the womanâs face didnât change at all.
She nonchalantly undid the ties on her bag and replied without looking up. Her tone of voice had only mellowed, if anything. âLong legs? Wings? Ugly head?â
Ari nodded.
âHighly likely. Iâve sent him back to Hell a dozen times. Keeps coming back.â
Now, it was Villy, Ari, and Stuey who were looking at each other, expressions silently asking each other if this strange woman was the crazy one.
âAre you a witch, or something?â asked Villy.
âYeah, you could say that.â She flipped open the front flap of her bag and reached inside. âDoes this belong to any of you?â
Like a rabbit out of a hat, she extricated the severed head of Aleister. Everyone gasped as she placed it on the wooden table. Aleister opened his eyes to see he was amongst friends.
âHi guys!â He beamed jovially and flashed a cheesy grin.
Stuey was the first to own up. âThatâs our⦠friend. Aleister.â
âNice friend you have,â scolded the woman. âHe bit my ankle.â
Aleisterâs eyes shot her a look of disdain. âYeah, well, you nearly stepped on my head, you fat cow!â
âWhat can I tell you?â sang the lady. âDonât loiter on my porch.â
âHow did you get all of the way back to the porch?â Villy asked the disembodied head, his voice betraying how intrigued he was by this piece of information.
