Chapter 12

Deputy Morgan despaired. He had no chance of promotion as long as Gable Trent wished to be the sheriff. That was the peril of having an immortal as your boss. Still, Trent’s current human form was in its late forties now. It wouldn’t last forever.

And what if he was reborn into a new body and still wanted to be sheriff?

Deputy Morgan knew he wasn’t a very good witch, which was why he’d joined the police force. Yet he knew he could still do a good job as sheriff. All he needed was a chance. His mother would be proud of him for the first time in her miserable life.

His mother was Amelia Darkhold, sister to Rose Mctaggert, witch representative on the supernatural council. All his life he’d been compared to Rose and his mother, the famous dark witch. Was it his fault he had magical dyslexia and couldn’t perform spells properly? If it was anyone’s fault, it was his parents. They gave him the faulty genes in the first place.

He put his foot down on the brakes, bringing the police vehicle to a halt. Adrian’s car was a burning wreck in the middle of the road. There was no sign of either Adrian or Clover Kwon.

He got out of his car, stepping towards the scene carefully.

“Adrian?” he called. “Clover?”

There was no answer.

Damn it.

He pulled out his cell and called Sheriff Trent. The man would be most displeased.

“What is it?” Trent demanded.

“Adrian’s car is on fire, and there’s no sign of either him or Clover Kwon,” he replied. “What do I do now?”

“Get back to the station.”

Trent hung up. Deputy Morgan was about to get back in his car and complain to himself when he noticed a patch of trampled grass by the roadside. He inspected it, finding many boot prints.

“It looks like an army has been through here,” he said.

Curious, and determined to show that he was a competent police officer, Deputy Morgan searched the area for clues. He found spent shell casings from some sort of gunfight.

He phoned the sheriff up again and told him.

“What does it mean?” he asked.

“It means that Adrian and Clover are being hunted,” said Trent.

Gable slammed his cell down onto his desk. He didn’t like enemies coming into his town and threatening his people. True, Adrian and Clover were outside the town limits at the moment, but they were still his people. The shikari would wish they’d never set foot on American soil once he was done tearing them into little tiny pieces.

He stormed out of his office and headed for his car. It was only when he was starting it up that he realized he needed another wolf to track them. The only other werewolf in town at the moment was Adrian’s sister, Astrid.

Lydia stared out of the window, envious of the people. They were enjoying their lives–living their lives. They were going to work and drinking coffee in cafes. They were going to the cinema and eating burgers. What did she have? She had nothing.
