Chapter 5

Ruby

The next morning, after Em leaves, I get a call from my mom. I see her and my dad for dinner every couple of weeks, but on our odd week off, she usually calls to catch up.

“Good morning, sweetie. How are you?”

“I’m wonderful, mom. How are you?”

“My goodness, I’m glad you’re doing well. I’m just fine. What’s got you all happy these days?”

I blush and sit on the couch. Snickerdoodle immediately jumps in my lap and starts to purr. I came out to my parents a few months ago. They were supportive right away, immediately telling me that they accept me as I am and they’re happy to have me as a daughter. I figured that would be their response, but it was still a nerve-wracking item on my to-do list to accomplish and took several weeks of pep talks from Alice and some internal anguish. It was admittedly a lot easier than I had built it up in my head. I am grateful for my experience of immediate acceptance, as I know that’s not how everyone’s parents react.

“Well, I’ve been hanging out with someone, and I think we might be dating or on our way to dating,” I say.

“Oh honey, I’m so happy for you! What’s his name?”

“Her name is Em.”

“Oh, of course, I’m sorry. What does she do?”

“She’s an artist. She’s very talented. She’s done some murals around town.”

“That’s lovely. And she’s treating you right?”

“It’s still new. We’ve only hung out a few times. I’m so comfortable around her. Snickerdoodle likes her too. It’s one of the easiest starts to a relationship I’ve ever had if it turns into one.”

“I’m glad to hear that. How did you meet? One of those apps?”

“We met at Pride, actually. It was great knowing right off the bat that she was queer too. I have no idea how to find bi or lesbian women in the wild yet.”

“How nice. Can I tell your dad?”

“Of course.”

We chat about the book club that she hosted this week, dad’s golfing, and my summer grading job. We spend about a half hour on the phone until we sign off and confirm next week’s dinner plans. I don’t bring up bringing Em yet, but if things keep going well, maybe in a few weeks.

I think back to when I confided in Alice that I thought I might land somewhere on the queer spectrum. I wasn’t totally satisfied with the bi ‘label’ yet, but I was definitely questioning being straight.

I started teaching at my school last August. Alice and I had hit it off right away as friends. We had met at the beginning of the year staff meeting with all the teachers. Alice had been teaching a few years longer than me, but it was her first year at our school, so we got to go through the newbie training together before school started for the kids.

Theater teachers and math teachers don’t necessarily run in the same circles, but we found times to hang out during open periods or on the odd teacher workday.
